Hi, on a factory exhaust clamp what would the finish have been In 68? I see some of the reproduction systems out there have bare steel and others have nickel plated. Which would be correct? Thanks!

As far as I know, Black oxide or phosphate is correct. I got these from Frank B, certified judge.

I purchased several sets of "lunch pail" exhaust hangers many years ago and they were all just bare metal. Some of them had more surface rust than others. The rubber portion was actually rubber remnants cut from the side wall of tires. As for the exhaust clamps, I would say that they were bare metal from the assembly line. I know that the original clamps on our 69 Charger RT were all just bare metal. Terry McCann a couple years ago had a supplier that had an extensive inventory of exhaust hangers and clamps that he provided to me. All of the components that he had were just plain stamped raw steel .Even the exhaust pipes back in the day show signs of just being the cold rolled steel with the weld seam running the length of the pipe. All of the pipe now is an aluminized material.

A good friend of ours was a zone manager for Chrysler for the parts depots and departments back in those days. According to him, the assembly line parts were not always the same components as the over the counter dealer parts. He said that was the case especially for wear items like exhaust, brake, hoses and such. I have seen some of the counter parts to have a cheap protective film on them. According to him, Walker and Marremont were the major exhaust suppliers to Chrysler for the parts depot which in turn supplied the dealerships. But he said that the assembly line manufacturer may be an entirely different vendor not known for supplying over the counter pieces.

I keep forgetting that I have a set of those David Wise books. He says bare steel for the clamps and hangers. Bolts for the hangers and the dual exhaust hanger plate that goes thur the floor are black metal oxide. Plate welded to the body painted same as car.

Interesting. I have/had original assembly line cars and none had this.
Like I said "as far as I know", seeing I paid big bucks from a certified OE Gold judge I figured they'd be correct. From what you and Richard are saying, that is not the case.

I've been wary of paper certifications of any kind after seeing some of the idiots who got degrees from my law school, and then went on to pass the bar exam.

look no further than congress, or any government agency for that matter :BangHead:

Those types typically graduate at the lower middle of the class. The top people get the big buck jobs in the private sector. My class rank was so low I couldn't get a government job. You know how that turned out:)
