Generally … the three digit number will be very close to tread width in all cases. But its in millimeters so you need to convert it to inches. Generally you want a wheel the same width as the tread. The section width will be roughly 1-1/2” wider than tread. Generally !!

Disagree. Even your own post #13 disagrees. 205mm is just a hair bigger than 8" (.07), your example shows 7.99 for section width.
I do agree that tread and wheel width should be close. There are recommended ranges for each tire size. Doesn't mean I always follow recommendations.......
(I've got a sixteen inch wide tire on a 12" rim. Should be at least a 14, 15 or 16 would be better, lol)
