I dont know why but suddenly I became curious on cars with factory undercoating which is what my 1969 GTX November built car from Lynch Road has. On my window sticker it has code J55 got $16.60. What a bargain. My question is was this undercoating applied by the workers with hand held nozzles or was it automated. When was it applied (ie: before final assembly or after). And was it applied underneath the trunk floor (above the gas tank). Any insight would be appreciated. It's not pretty but no doubt it has protected the car for the last 57 years. Here are a few pics.

My 66 Charger looks much the same !

It’s still solid after all these years!

I’ll wager you had assembly line worker bees

Providing the undercoating to the bodies as

Optioned .

I would say what a thing of beauty!

An unsung hero that’s preserved history!

Mopar2ya!

My '70 Charger built in St. Louis has the J55 undercoating option.

There is no undercoating on the bottom side of the trunk floor (above the gas tank) as shown below...the four pictures in the following post:

I have the original fuel tank and the mat that went on top of it stored away. I can take a look at them in a few days to see if there is any evidence of undercoating overspray on them.

I don't recall seeing any undercoating overspray on the rear axle, differential, and drives shaft (aka: prop shaft). The drive shaft tunnel is undercoated of course as you can see in this post:

Undercoaters could get pretty wild with their "technique".

I've seen spray on the underside of the hood, as well as all the way up the "line of sight" of the inner fenders.

My dad bought a new 1970 Valiant, which we were sure was built on a Monday. Worst quality Mopar dad ever owned, traded after three years. He always ordered J55. The underside on that car had so many bare spots, the dealer gave us half a dozen cans of spray undercoating for me to finish the job.

That would make since if the application was done late in the assembly. When it warms up I will take a closer look.

That sounds like it corresponds to a previous post on the same topic.

Overall I am happy with the uniformity of what was applied back in late 1968. Doesnt look like it was poorly done.
Looks similar to what was on Baby Blue, also an unrestored, well preserved GTX. I'll bet that one, and yours, were both built in the middle of the week.

I'd say it's the last thing they do before lowering the body onto the drivetrain/suspension.......no?

Here are some pictures of mine when I installed the new gas tank. Tank was undercoated, but no undercoating underneath it.

When factory undercoating is sprayed on by a human the rear axle, leaf springs, K member all out of the car. Gas tank and fuel/brake lines on the car. They don't get it where the trans crossmember bolts in, they tape off the holes for the seats.

interesting - makes sense to me.

Our GTX has 55,767 miles on it and those are original all verifiable by records we have since new. She has some scuffs, scrapes and a few small minor dings but I love the patina.
