Failed Smog !

Good thread - I hope the OP gets it done with all this good info. I learned a lot by reading the whole posting. My first thought was - wait a minute I never had to have my X smogged here in CA - a 68. Then learned it’s 76+ that’s it’s required on. A 76 is still a classic vehicle. Kind of a screw job if you ask me - a typical socialist screw job. Bought my ride in 71 and frankly I don’t recall ever having to smog it thru 48 yrs of ownership - MN or Ca.

In Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson, not the rural areas) 67 and up have to be smogged, unless you have classic car insurance!

Here in Ca bi-annual smogs were required on our older cars till around 96-97..

Guaranteed to Pass is similar to Seafoam and other strong cleaners. The idea is it cleans your valves for better compression and cleaner ignition, etc.

As I recall the people's republic smog test is at idle, correct?

Google retard timing to pass smog and read about what that impacts. I think there is a sweet spot in timing where the burn is somewhat longer and the CO is reduced.
Do you think I should try guaranteed to pass or the seafoam kit ? It's worth a try, I mean I passed everything else on my test . This may do the trick .

Looks like YOU didn't read the sheet....

CO% at 15 mph had a max of 1.21 with 2.17 recorded. CO% at 25 mph had a max of 1.01 with 2.02 measured. NOX was well below the limits.
It is one thing to be wrong. It is another to insult others when YOU are the one that is wrong.
Hey Korn Dog...
Thanx for the correction... :D

Uhhh, others were right, you were wrong yet you are compelled to insult me? Really ?

When I lived in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania only the urban/suburban areas required emission tests...rural end less populated areas were exempt. Living in a suburban area, the state adopted real time on line testing for hydro carbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) at several operating points...idle, low speed (25 mph). PA also required annual safety inspections (brakes, exhaust systems, lights, body rust) and both inspections could be done by the same service station/dealer/private licensed locations. I used a local private licensed station. This person had a "test mule" whose readings met or exceeded state requirements. The car had 2 converters, fuel was dosed with ethanol, special carb settings, distributor settings. When testing my cars, all pertinent info (make, model, VIN#) was added to the test computer and the test mule's exhaust sampled and centered in the computer. After the info was entered, the computer printed the emission sticker applied to the windshield next to the safety inspection sticker. The test mule's settings could be "adjusted" so results were different for each car it was used for a slight random-ness in reporting. I paid a few $$ extra for this service....did the world come to an end because of "dirty cars"?? No...but the state legislature continued to press for only the urban/suburban areas get vehicles emission tested.....makes ABSOLUTELY no sense.....test every one or no one. Not sure what PA requires now. The state spent several billions of dollars on state emission testing centers (~75+) that issued the emission stickers....they had chassis dyno's to run test vehicle's while collection exhaust samples. After several years of chaos and political in-fighting, this was all abandoned and the facilities sold for 5-7 cents/dollar cost. And all the PA taxpayers ate the losses.....and the air quality remains basically unchanged. I believe residents of California may be required to have a permit to be sble to fart.......some things make no sense.....all because some politician thinks so.......just my opinion of course.

I remember back in the 80’s taking my Charger to Sears to get an emission sticker. I had the 2 1/8” Black Jack headers on it to 12” Thrush flange mount mufflers. I had an exhaust shop send the pipes out the side similar to the T/A, AAR. Since it had no H pipe, it was only testing 4 cylinders. I did do the DC manual .08 pin drill on the outboard metering plates to help richen the idle.

This is the second sentence in the original post. "I failed CO% on my smog test for the second time "
PA did not test for NOx, which is a generalized expression for NO (Nitric oxide) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) reputed when combined with unburned hydrocarbons (HC) form a "photo chemical smog" which when concentrated during a thermal inversion becomes visable and palatable to some. LATER other elements were combined and contribute to smog's density. This is why the catalytic converter was applied to vehicle's exhaust. The converter is an oxidizing reaction device, using a platinum and rhodium catalyst that converts all the bad stuff to carbon dioxide gas.....which is what BRAIN DEAD BIDEN wants to eliminate.....catch 22.....it's not a simple fix.....

I remember as a kid in 1977 waiting for the bus on cold mornings… a guy in the neighborhood got a brand new AMC Matador 4 door. Probably a 360 or a 304. The exhaust sounded like a whooshing tube when he’d pull out, and the smell of rotten eggs was awful. Interestingly, acid rain was a thing that showed up with the implementation of catalytic converters.

If you can find a guy with a machine that "accidentally" hooks it to a 5.9 Dakota and prints it out as your car.

Not many people willing to risk their livelihood to keep someone else's 76 Cordoba on the road in California...

True I was thinking out loud.. Around here it wasn't a big deal but I forgot California is where all the craziness starts so they probably would check it somehow...

I have fresh plugs and filter, oil change and all maintenance has been done . I'm not sure what else to do but to just take it to a smog repair .
You answer was in post #4.

My buddy owns a smog shop, the state came in and mounted a camera in his shop that covers the computer/dyno/stall where all smogs are done... You never know when they are watching....

Sounds like he’s better off scratching that job and just leading a life of crime.

Sounds like some "equipment malfunctions" due to force majeure (?) may be required just to check if/when "big brother" may be watching...?....only the shadow knows for sure.....

From what he said apparently all the smog shops are under surveillance, in order to get your state permit it was forced on you... He's a pretty straight up guy so I don't think he got legitimately busted doing bad smogs, but as I explained later the stuff the state has busted people for anything is possible...
