Fake 4 Speed shifter

I have bad knees but love 4-speed mopars and the Hurst Pistol grip shifter. I adapted a Pistol grip shifter in 1992 on my 72 Satellite automatic console. Then someone made one and is selling it now. I do not like the looks of the add on look alike. I adapted a 70-74 Challenger 4 speed pistol grip shifter again to my current 72 RR clone 904 Automatic. Check it out. Yes my car is automatic. This set up is not permanent. I can change back to my T-handle automatic selector in about 15 minutes.

OK, I will get photos. You are going to be shocked how simple it is. My car had a T-handle console. It will also work with the round handle but a small mod is needed. One note is that the gear indicator will be gone. But anyone that drives a mopar knows what gear you are in without the indicator. I can also change back to the stock T handle set up in about 15 minutes.

I agree the look is great, however I just could not do it in my AT cars, the PG experience is rowing the gears which obviously you are not doing in a AT car. That said, that is just my preference, great job.

You lost me in what you said. Rowing the gears?? What are you saying?

Put on brake, Engine off, and put car into Drive. Makes it easier to work on. Remove the T handle. Unscrew the top console plate. Remove the Gear indicator plate. DO not cut or change anything on the shift set up. Take 4-speed shifter and using two hose clamps, clamp the shifter to the plate that the T handle slides on. You only need to place a small piece of rubber between the shifter and the plate This moves the pistol grip shifter a little away and keeps shifter from slipping. Keep the bottom of the 4 speed handle a little above the metal shift mechanism to keep from rubbing when you move the handle while shifting. Get a 4 speed rubber boot. Remove the metal base then glue the boot to the underside of the console plate. Slide the rubber boot over the shifter and then screw the console plate back into position. It now looks like a 4-speed but will not move. Remember you have not done anything to the shaft the T-handle slides on. The small button on top is still there but is now under the boot top. Feel it and then cut a small hole on the boot top to allow the button to stick thru. Find a small piece of round metal that just slides on the button a small amount. You can now depress that metal and the button works again. The 4 speed shifter goes forward and back just like the T Handle but no gear indicator. I put it in first and move forward into 2 and drive just like the T-handle. Do not glue that metal to the button since once you get to a car show, you can remove it and no one will know you have an Automatic. They will not notice the button sticking a little through the boot top. Once you get ready to leave, take it out of your pocket and put it on the button, and you are away. FUN. I also have a second console plate that I can pull the fake 4 speed off and put the T-handle, indicator plate and that console plate back on to go back to stock. Takes about 15 minutes to change out. I have fun with this at a car show. The confusion comes when some one notices you have no clutch pedal. They get confused and want to talk. We love it.
