This is a RR. That my friend recently inherited from his late father. It is a one owner car that has been parked outside in a fencerow since 1974. Original motor(stuck), original 4 speed. Not many miles. Rusty but good frame rails and floor. Good considering. I tried to buy it many times over the years. I will post a pic of the fender tag when I get one. My question to the wise ones is this. Keep it factory?(rebuild motor, keep brakes drum style, ect.) He wants to do a fair amount of modifying. I convinced him to wait a bit and get some opinions.

Fencerow find. Damn spellcheck

If it were mine, I'd modify it to suit me and wouldn't listen to what others had to say. Now if it were a Hemi or an A12 car, that would make it a different animal. If value is an issue, just don't do anything that would make it hard to bring back to it's original build...

Personally I'm a purist, if that car made it this long with original parts I would keep it that way.

It's his car now, he should do what he wants. Keep the original parts, definetly don't sell or throw the out. Don't make any big mods that can't be turned around either.

The brakes and wheel bearings are shot but that's really not a problem. The title so far is tho. His dad lost the original and never renewed it. Here in Iowa they(County treasurers) are nazis when it comes to that stuff. I agree with you on the purist approach. Not sure if he intends to just get it running/driving or do a full resto.

IF it weren't a 4 speed that still had everything numbers matching I would agree. It like a rust bucket time machine. Any way he chooses will be pricey. I have a couple of b-body parts cars. That he can rob parts from. I'm not going to discourage him either way. His dad was a car hoarder. This was the crown jewel but there was also a IH scout, another IH truck both 345 powered, a rust-ang, and various other vehicles.

I like it. I have a numbers matching 69 post 383 4spd as well. For now it is staying original. Not to many out there with their original equipment anymore. Some say it's just a 383 but too me that isn't the point. If it was a Hemi car everyone would say keep it original. But how many Hemis made it to today? Not many. So anything original is cool. But if he does customize it to his liking, keeping the original parts is just the same as building it that way. It can be put back. JMHO.

before you start a " full resto "
do you have the time and $$$$$ to attempt such a task.

The answer to that is a no. He is a Chevy guy who has several 4x4s with 40" tires and huge lifts. I've tried to buy the RR from him several times. It was his dad's so he won't sell. I don't see it even becoming a drivable car without spending at least 5k.

I am waiting to see what color that codes out to be. If it's 999 then it's even better yet.
I'm waiting for a pic of the fender tag. I told him that the color and place of birth are huge factors in moparring. I also told him to get the built sheet and put it in a safe place. Hoping rodents ain't got to it.

Buy a lifted Chevy 4x4 and trade it to him!
I'm trying to trade him all my Chevy 4x4 and 2x4. (I have several) And some cash. He just buried his dad (and has a lot of cleanup work). I just hope he doesn't do anything irreversible. I wouldn't doubt if he tries to stick a 318/904 in it out of a satellite his dad had parked. That's not permanent tho. Don't want to pisssed him off by bugging him, but he is a Chevy guy and they do stupid things on a whims notice. Lol

Chevy guy.............He will NEVER understand what that car means to us.

Not a true purest by any means. But I have always had a rule of thumb on old cars. If it is original and survived the years KEEP IT THAT WAY. We don't see too many this day and age that have survived. And if you want to modify one there are so many out there missing original parts. So why not go that direction. All the cars I have ever modified were not original.(disclaimer) Just MHO and not meant to stir up a debate.
