I am doing some repair on the fenders of my 68 Coronet 500 and need some help. I created a patch panel for the driver fender matching it with the piece I cut out (see the first picture grouping). I wanted to compare the fender to the passenger fender to see if the angles matched (see second picture grouping). When I place a straightedge on the front of the fender on the passenger side (4), the straightedge hits the back of the fender right at the wheelwell (3). However, when I do the same to the driver fender (1), the top of the straightedge is about two inches too high (2).

I know that the car's been banged around a bit and I have some straightening to do on both fenders, but I really want to know what the proper angle should be. Could someone who owns a 68 Coronet attach a straightedge to the bottom front of the fender and take a picture of when it hits the bottom back of the fender?

Thanks!

Try measuring from the body line to the straight edge in pictures 1 and 4. The shape / angles do not appear to be the same, which would cause a change in the height at the back. That is just how it looks in the pics to me.

How does the fender fit when you test fit it to the body?

I'll try that.

The fenders fit fine. However, I'm guessing that the car's been banged up a bit; there's clearly a small buckle dent on the top of this driver fender, which may account for the front of the fender to be "higher" than it should be.

The section you replaced has the mounting tabs on it, that mate to the studs on the body, correct? If the fender fits now, what’s going to happen if you change the angle of that replacement section, along with the mounting tabs. Will it still fit well? I might be more concerned with how it fits, vs the angles you are looking at. Is it going to be that noticeable as is?

That patch panal needs to drop aprox 1/4" at the rear and come forward at the top a tiny bit.
I would have used more of the panel but now that it's cut bring that top front ahead just a little bit.
Tac that spot . Then pull the rear down 1/8 to mabey 1/4 " and tac. If it humps in the center of the top edge, release the rear bottom till the hump is gone..
These things are not Lazer copies.
You may have to grind your rear edge into shape and re weld.

You can get a rough idea, but there is no way to compare one side with the other because they will never be symmetrical. They weren't made that way back then.

I can put a contour gauge on one side of 69 fender and it isn't even close on the other side, so don't drive yourself crazy because they will never match.

Just repair your fender so it looks nice and fits the side you're working on remember they were built from a CAD model/ CNC produced die back then.
