I am looking at a 63 sport fury, and am told the engine was changed. I am trying to figure out what was originally in the car.

The car was built in Newark and I believe it's the number under the A THAT IS the engine code.

A=2

Some things to consider:

Coding placement varied by plant during that era of production. The Lynch Road plant did code engines under the "A".

Different plants placed the same code different places on the tag. I do not know where on the tag Newark coded the engine.

Quite often, the standard engine was not coded on the tag. Only optional engines were. So depending on your make and model, the engine may not be coded on the tag.

A code 2 engine in 1963 would indicate the 225 /6. Since this engine was not available in a Sport Fury, we know that A/2 is not your correct engine code.

The standard engine in a Sport Fury was a 318-2 with the 361-2 (code 3) and 383-4 (code 5) optional.
