Hi all,

I'm just getting into the whole fender tag thing... I'm getting a kick out of figuring out where my car came from.

According to the VIN decoder at FABO, my Charger was built in St. Louis, a "high price class" 2 door hardtop, 227830 in the assembly sequence.

Next up, decoding the fender tag... who can tell me what all these numbers mean?

Thanks for the help, always enjoy learning new stuff from the Mopar Wise Men.

You da man, zdillinger! Thanks a bunch! Knowing what the codes mean somehow makes me dig my car even more...

One more question... how many Chargers were produced in '74?

Thanks again!

White book shows:

8,876 total (US, CA and export CARS) WL21
29,101 Total WH23 cars
36,399 Total WP29 cars

28= 28" radiator
END = end of sales codes

411 = Scheduled production date. May or may not be the actual assembly date.

227830 = VIN assigned. Is not related to actual production sequence.

Congrats and enjoy the car.

Here is the official vin decoder doc from

The problem with on line code decoders is they do not distinguish between years or models. For example what came with the A01 package in a '69 Valiant is completly different than A01 in a 1970 Imperial.

Most decoders incorrectly list sales code E63 as the 383 HP 335 horse engine. E63 only tells you it's a 383-4bbl. It does not tell you which of the several 383-4bbl variants were available. There is a difference in HP rating between an A body 383 and the B body 383 non HP and HPs. All are 383-bbls but all are different.

The best resource for decoding and package items is the original factory data books posted in the Hamtramck Historical library. http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/library.shtml

That site is great I use it all the time still down loading all the info takes like a year lol

But I guess if you are a purist then it matters more.

Purist

"A purist is one who desires that an item remain true to its essence and free from adulterating or diluting influences. The term may be used in almost any field, and can be applied either to the self or to others. Use of the term may be either pejorative or complimentary, depending on the context. Because the appellation depends on subjective notions of what is "pure" as opposed to "adulterating" as applied to any particular item, conflict can arise both as to whether a person so labeled is actually a purist and as to whether that is desirable.

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, the term dates from 1706 and is defined as "a person who adheres strictly and often excessively to a tradition", especially "one preoccupied with the purity of a language and its protection from the use of foreign or altered forms."

" doin it my way period"

lol have fun with it.

I admire everyone that gets involved and inspired with his/her car, Makes them more enjoyable to have, Ive always said the real value i put on my car is the fun! nothing more, doesn't matter if its worth 2000 or 20.000 its about the fun! I love to read the excitement someone else has over there ride, if they change it or want it original, getting excited and having the time of our lives... enjoy!

Another question... I'm trying to find out how much Chargers sold for in '74... seems to be in the range of $3500 new.... which translates with inflation to around $17,100 in 2012 dollars.

There is no way you can buy a new car as awesome as a Charger for that money these days. Here's a new car $17K will buy you in 2012...

Base price on a 1974 WP was about $3,500. You could easily add $1,000-$2,000 in options so realistically $5,000 - $5,500 for an SE. Less for the other models. Base price on a WH was about $3,200
