Hey guys, I'm trying to clean up my fender tag and get it repainted what would you guys suggest on how to go about this. If you see on the top of the tag it had some rust bubbles and imperfections. Is their a way to remove this and get it back to a flush smooth surface? Thanks in advance.

Not an expert, but I'd knock all the paint off, and go over it front and back with a wire brush. Then hit it with a rust converter and paint it.

I would NOT hit it with a wire brush, use paint stripper and a tooth brush.
then when its clean lacquer thinner and paint it with self etching primer, then your color

I hit mine with glass beads then cleared over it. (until I can repaint it body color)

Mine had paint and rust both. I used a paint stripper on it to get all the paint off. Then threw it in my 5 gal pail with water and molasses for a few days. Cleaned it up nicely but didn't fill in the pin holes from the rust. I then painted it body color and installed it. Good as it gets.

Thanks for the replies, if I put it in paint thinner than put it in evapo- rust would that kind of clear up the top right corner of it?

Ya that would work, I would still use a stiff nylon brush on both cleanings.

The Fender tag is pretty tough....mine was chromed by a previous owner
I was shitting bricks when I dropped it in to a local Chrome Shop to have it and some valve covers de-chromed quite some years back. I had visions of the guy pulling my tag out of the Vat, with nothing but the hook it was attached to. Luckily, it worked out well, and my painter took care of the clean up - treated it the same as the underhood paint - epoxy primer (a dusting to give enough coverage) and then one shot of primer before colour and clear coats. Looks like it was never touched.
As long as the tag is not crusted up with rust, you should be able to dip and clean if required.

Either way be very gentle. Even a few seconds to long with glass bead can damage it. Good old paint stripper and gently steel wool it until paint lifts. Wash by hand and maybe try finishing putty to fill larger pits.

I put mine in paint thinner for 2 days and none of the orange paint came off, I ended up buying a can of paint remover spray from napa and within 5 minutes it down to the bare metal. When I wiped it away I saw for the first time the original color of the car which was pretty cool! I then put it in evapo- rust and it cleaned the metal. I painted it and it came out way better than expected
