Took my car to Motorheads http://motorheadsoh.com/Home_Page.html early this year. Their bread and butter is welding and machine shop work but they do street rods and muscle car work too. The car ran rich and had a mild backfire on deceleration, and these guys know Mopars and Holleys. Plan was to put a major tune on the carbs, install my factory power steering (I'm getting too old/lazy to fight the radials with manual steering), install subframe connectors, put on my nice painted calipers and new hoses, line lock, other small stuff. Well, the motor that was in the car needed a rebuild. Looked at the clutch and the fingers were worn so thin where they hit the throwout bearing it was dangerous. Ok, need new motor and clutch. Went with Edelbrock RPMs, Keith Black pistons, Comp Cam Extreme Energy .525 lift cam, twin disc McLeod clutch. Oh, yeah, the 3" exhaust that was on the car and had been converted from factory manifolds to headers multiple times had to go so time for Flowmaster pipes and Magnaflow muffs. I questioned the cam size and the clutch but Jim said I would be really happy. Time went on and they crossed different projects off the list like re-enginnering the tranny mount. Motor ran sweet on the test stand. Problems cropped up once it was in the car - it took them using the process of elimination but the clutch had been installed incorrectly so they fixed that. Ran great on the stand with their points distributor but my MP electronic dizzy had issues. Went with Pertronics Flamethrower III all in one. Still had issues. Center carb had issues and was taken out and rebuilt twice.
They spend hours and hours working on it, asking me to be patient because they didn't want to give it back to me unless it was perfect. They know I am going to Carisle and so I have one of their distributors on loan until I come back.
Went for a test drive with Jim, the owner, and a long time racer. He drove first. WOW! Had to pull the seat cover out of my butt. I drove it and it is like a different car. Starts right up with a pump and a turn of the key. Idles nice, not too loud, but when you romp on it the sound is great. Instant throttle response. Clutch is light and fast. The power steering makes it so much nicer to drive. Can't wait to try out the line lock and make some smoke.
I'll be in the fun field at Carlisle. I'll have a FBBO sticker on the quarter window if I can find it, or I'll put my FBBO t-shirt on the passenger seat.
I can't stop grinnin'!
