As you know, I'm general HS shop teacher, not a vocational one. I get 140 kids per year in my 6 classes that I teach. The skill level runs from not knowing how to read a ruler, to a few with mechanical aptitude, but no experience other than destroying a jeep or two in the woods. Me? a recycled mechanical engineer from the Aerospace biz, shop teaching now for 8 yrs. Several of my kids go on to UTI or ATC type tech schools. Its a great job in a supportive district. I think there are only a handfull of auto classes left here in NJ. Most have been closed down as obsolete. :black_eye:

We are very profiecient at bolt/unbolt repairs, light welding. We've re-ringed engines, swapped tranny tailshafts.....but mostly stayed "stock" with repairs. We don't do any painting, other than spraybombing. We send out paint work. But we will replace panels via MIG, as needed. We've restored; 60 pontiac, 65 Barracuda, 72 Scamp (S6 to 383), 71 Coronet, 64 Valiant, and a 73 Swinger.

So last year I picked up a 65 Coronet 2dr. It was a S6, 3 spd column shifter.
I already have a 440/727, but then I need how to restore it.

After some conversations with several listers on this site. Here is what we are going to do;
1) add a front staight axle from an A100 van. (Thanks Tom!)
2) mini-tub the rear, after axle move if necessary.
3) Alter front and rear axle position.
4) Color? red interior, matte black exterior with gold graphics. Built to look like a 65 race car.
5) Go with a 4 spd
6) Go racing with the shop kids, hopefully at the E-town nats. July 2011.

Some items to resolve: how far to move axles, how far to strip the interior, to cage or not to cage (440 probably won't push us below 12s anyway), how to set up the cross-steering, figure out a front brake plan.

Fun stuff like that! More to follow. here's a engine bay b4/after.

The 65 coronet 440 "starting point". I'm going to set up a "shop" acct. so the kids can post directly to this forum. Please be kind, they will be very green, but eager! I'll be posting to as myself. I've got much to learn too.

We'll be documenting along the way! wish us luck!

Sounds like a real neat project. The kids are lucky to have you for a teacher. Good luck! I'm looking forward to following along. Hope you can keep them out of the "Babes" thread. :rolling:

crappy slow start expected; Just had some "light" shoulder surgery. turns out the quick scope job showed the Dr. 2 complete shredded rotator cuff holes and a torn bicep tendon. Great.... 6 weeks in a sling and a slow rehab to boot.

these darn Seniors better hit the ground running, we'lve got a lot to do is a little time!

Valiant cause.........Good luck to you and the shop kids on your resto work. Welcome to all of ya

I know exactly where your comming from shopguy,a few years ago I tore my left bicep and tore the tendon of the bone in my forearm. I've had some injuries in my time but the pain and recovery on that one could only be described as horrendous.

Good luck on the recovery and the restorations...your doing a good thing there, make sure you keep us up to date on all counts.
