CO just passed a 6.5% tax increase on all firearms and ammo sales, so I'm planning to stock up before this takes affect. I currently own a Glock 19 with basic 9mm target rounds. What is your all preferred choice of firearm and ammo for mostly home defense? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
 
Check out "guns, dogs, and blades" on the A-body side. Moderated by a firearms instructor, GOOD stuff. Helped me with my 45 and 9 mm purchase.
Home defense is whatever is closest. 9, 38, 357, 40, 44, 45 or twelve gauge.
But that's only after they get by four big GSD's (good luck, they'll NEED it!)
I've got friends who have driven from a far western state that won't be mentioned, to a slightly less western state, to buy ammo and magazines without having to show anything besides money.

Screwed here in CA, the clowns just passed an additional 11% tax on all guns and ammo this year.
That's on top of the 7.75% sales tax too, and the dealer fees and background check fees.
Not cheap to own a gun in CA..... or anything else by the way.....
 
My newest favorite
1911 Kimber Custom Stainless II 5" .45acp
with compensator, Pachmayer finger grips, G10 & mag well w/8 & 10rd Wilson Combat mags
usually FMJ, have Federal & Winchester mostly
various weights, or loads all depending on what it's for,
Hardball or my own reloads,
I keep 2 special 10rd mags with hollow points for home defense

A tactical 12guage shotgun for home defense is a must. Most of us do not have time to practice properly with a handgun. But a nice AR will work fine if it is handled well.
Something to think about is Henry came out with a 9mm carbine called the homesteader. You can have the magazine setup to match your Sig, Glock or SW that way your sidearm will also fit your rifle.
I don't have one yet but the reviews are great and I do have several Henry rifles now and they are fantastic.

One of the main reasons I left it back in 2016. I could see it on the horizon as every year it was getting harder and harder to buy anything related to guns and ammo. So I moved next door to NV where guns and ammo freedom are so much better. The trouble is that whenever we have a large gun show here, so many CA residents come up here and buy us out leaving those here as residents scrambling to pick anything up as the CA bunch has cleaned us out. I don't have an issue with y'all at least doing so to save on your ammo as you connot purchase guns as an out-of-state resident. But come on here...At least try not to hoard it all and leave us high and dry...Just a suggestion is all...cr8crshr/Bill :usflag: :usflag: :usflag:

Having said all that think seriously about how you will use it and future use. I prefer lever guns due to the feel, interaction and ability to shoot fast in many conditions.
Some people think a 30-30 is too light but they are excellent out to 150 yards and even more scoped with good ammo. I prefer the 45-70 but a lot of guys don't because the recoil can be brutal if not padded handled properly.
I would not hesitate to use either for home defense.
I do have some bolt guns that I enjoy distance shooting with but they would be horrible at home defense.
A s I said previously the tactical shotgun is great but don't expect to shoot geese or clays with it.
So again think about long term use also

I also handload. It's cheaper and you can tailor your rounds better.
 
Semi-auto 12ga with a 100-rd drum packing slugs. 00 buck is fine too though, and availability makes them a little easier to stockpile.
Inside the house, I'd opt for my birdshot-filled drum....plenty effective with less collateral damage.

As I've said for years... if, as a 'control state' resident, you've waited until now to arm up....bummer!
 
Hellcat 9mm with 145gr HST for carry. 145gr jhp's in the safe for plinking or other use.

Home defense? Pistol-grip Mossberg 500 pump with led light, alternating loads. 00 buck, slug, 00 buck, slug, 00 buck.

I don’t like 9mm at all! I’ve investigated way too many failures to stop the threat. I know many will speak up and say it’s just fine. That’s ok, it’s going to smart and leave a mark for sure!

I like the good old .45. Maybe the only disadvantage is recoil, but doesn’t bother me a bit. Advantages are stopping power, even ball ammo. Accurate at close range. If you want something with a little more recoil bite and stopping power, 357 sig. Glock make one, the 32. Will penetrate more but works.

All that said, get something you’re comfortable shooting and what fits your hand. Home defense, that’s the key. If you need it, You’ll be stressed and you’ll want something you’re confident with!

Not quite, but I'll keep an eye on it.

The FABO guys have kept their guns, knives, and dogs thread out of news & politics forum. The FBBO guys should be able to behave and keep this thread out of the PF.
 
I like the federal HST in 9mm.
Carry 9 is usually on me around the house and night stand, I figure I am most used to it.
I think as long guns go an ar is much easier to handle than a 12 ga, especially for a woman.
 
Firearms:
Something that is a quality item, not cheap.
Something that fits the hand nicely and is comfortable to hold and operate.
Revolvers for the ladies in the house.
I have revolvers and semi-auto pistols.
I like my Sig Sauers
I like my S&W revolvers
I like my Ruger semi-auto pistol
I liked a Springfield 9mm I tried at the store/range. I almost bought it, but it wasn't as easily concealable as my Sig. I am tempted to go out and buy one anyway.
A semi-auto carbine is handy when traveling; as is a lever action.

Calibers:
9mm are plentiful
22LR shouldn't be discounted.
Nothing wrong with a 38, 38+P
40S&W works for me.
Buy them in bulk.
