Flat low sheen black paint ?

When I restored the 65, I painted it then assembled it. I spent allot of time worrying about paint damage. I'm going to wait on the 69 until the car is mostly put together before painting.


The under carriage and engine area along with inside has been painted. I see a lot of cars in the black flat low sheen paint.

What kind of paint is it, or is this just primer?

are you talking about the blackout on the front radiator support area, kinda behind the radiator grill and headlight buckets? I think that's just flat black paint shot haphazardly as cars came down the line.

Rattle can flat black shot poorly (after a couple drinks?) and with little to no surface prep would probably be an accurate reproduction on most cars.
 
Most of the time it’s not primer. It’s a flattened black or chassis-style paint made to look dull but still protect.
 
I agree with Wild R/T the Sems Hot Rod black is a great product. The underside of my racecar is painted with it (13 years). Cleans up great. Very durable. Even in the areas where stones hit. Lays out nice. No streaks or splotches

I think he wanting this for the outer body for now. Are you wanting to use it as a primer base later when you get to the body/paint stage? If so, maybe a black epoxy primer with some flattener added if it dries with too much gloss?

It’s early so I could be misunderstanding the question. Time for another cup of coffee.
 
One thing about "satin black" ... regardless of what brand you use, they virtually ALL match and blend for touch-ups !!

One thing to consider though ... satin black was used extensively on GM's but very lettle on Mopars. The only satin black on Mopars were the K-member, engine brackets and pulleys and misc small parts. On a Mopar you might consider using "body color" with a satin finish.

When I did my '69 RR I wanted the underside covered but I wanted it in "body color" but I also wanted durability. I shot the underside with tintable Raptor Liner and I couldn't be more satisfied !! Just a thought ...

DP 90 epoxy is great stuff. But it is not UV resistant.

And he doesn't comment. Could go to a John Deere dealership and get Blitz black, it's what my hoods are going to be painted with.
 
I want to use a product that is a flat black and that can be sanded and painted over at a later date. All body work will be done. The radiator support has all ready been blacked out with a flat
acrylic.

Looks like primer may work?

Funny went to 3 sites and looked this stuff up and I still don't what this paint is? Enamel , acrylic, epoxy? I may have missed something?
 
DP 90 epoxy is great stuff. But it is not UV resistant.

Doug, Isn’t that basically true for all primers though? It sounds like flat black primer is what he’s looking for. I don’t think UV would be a big issue for a couple of years if the car is mostly in the garage except for weekend outings.
 
Call a Deere dealer near you tomorrow. It's a top paint without a catalyst. I painted the gun nose on my airplane with it, it's flat. Shoots nice, it can look different if shot wet, dry or in-between. I have a qt out in the shop, will try and remember to look for it when I go out.
