Yeah that area Ashville & Maggie Valley area were hit the worst,
from what I've seen on TV anyway
(area 1 of where they film 'Moonshiners', Discovery/History Channel Network),
it's not exactly a wealthy area, not a big vacation home area either
(decent tourism)
just a bunch of working stiffs & agriculture, lots of small businesses
hard working stiffs...
And/or they are not fans of the "*current govt. supporters" area,
that also could be 1/2 the problem...
*They (current govt.) don't care about these poor people...
It isn't their voter base...
(Poor in the sense of "a disaster" not wealth, or lack of it, they have good lives
without being filthy rich, these are true Americans, not some bloviating a--holes)

Helene Storm death toll is over 230 (?) IIRC now, that's truly sad stuff

There IS a lot of tourism in the Asheville area but the people that live there full time are salt of the earth.

I've not heard why the rivers were at near flood stage prior (days) before the storm got there.

Agreed. Let's please add context - this was when it passed my mother's place in NE FL.
