How'd the coalman fire coal into the boiler on those backward-cab locomotives?
These Southern Pacific cab-forward locomotives were oil fired, the fireman could stay up front. This particular design came about because certain SP routes had tunnels and conventional cab locations were causing the crews to be choked with smoke.
