I found the source of the red ooze that's been clogging up my fuel filter. I dropped the gas tank and pulled the sender unit and holy crap! There wasn't much left of it. How gas was still getting up it is a mystery to me. It was completely corroded, holes eaten through parts of it, and the float wasn't just leaking... it was gone!

Ah its got another 10 years in it send it to grave yard cars they will restore it !

the sock is still there, unbelievable.

Good time to go to two fuel filters. 125um at the tank and 25um at the carburetor. Works well.

What was your clue to look in the tank?
And just how long HAS your fuel gauge not worked then?

The last time my fuel gauge worked was the day I bought the car and brought it home, which was about 2012. :)

I looked at the tank because two weekends ago, I went to take my wife to work, and the car started losing power going up a hill near our house. It was fine coming down the hill, but not up. And it was fine when level. The only thing I could think of was a fuel issue, so I pulled the filter off, and clean gas came out of the carb. Then I tipped the fuel filter and this red ooze started coming out. I blew into the other end, and after a moment of resistance a blast of that crap came out and the filter seemed fine.

The car ran great for a few more days, then it started bogging down and died. I pulled the filter off and blew through it again and more of that ooze came out and I knew there was something bad going on in the gas tank. So I ordered a new tank and sender unit, and this is what I found when I yanked the old one.

Your car sounds a lot like me.

Wow. The float was gone. I have a 75 Fury which has been stored in a dry garage for years. The gas tank was very rusted, so I had it cleaned out and sealed and I reinstalled it in the car. I didn't drive the car, only ran it occasionally, got busy and left it sitting there, about 8 years. This summer, I decided I wanted to drive it. Long story short: put three gallons of new gas in it, got it running nicely, but it would only run for 5 to 30 seconds. Found no fuel coming out of line, dropped the fuel tank and found the sender unit, original to the car and not too bad 8 years ago, very rusty, and NO float! It also dissolved totally. I knew something was wrong when the gas gage didn't show any deflection with more gas in it. But I thought somebody had tampered with the car (locked garage). I don't understand how a brass float could dissolve totally in gasoline. How would you prevent this? Now I have three and a half gallons of gas I don't even dare to put in my lawn mower.
