Up for sale is a very nice base plate for fresh air cars such as Roadrunner and Super Bees. This is correct for 383 and 400 cars but not 440’s. I had this base media blasted and powder coated (2 coats) recently. Base plate has zero dents but does show evidence of some pitting in a area or two. Please look at all pictures closely and I will take more if needed? I’m asking $450 for this, shipped within the continental US.
ASKING PRICE LOWERED $400

I was told by him that it would help cover the light pitting on this base. I’m quite naive when it comes to the powder coating process, was I getting smoke blown up my arse by my powder coater? He’s always done very nice work for me, I hope?

Ah, I see.

Basically, powder is very similar to paint in that it goes on only a few mils thick. Just like painting your car, the finish will generally highlight imperfections more than it will fill them. When it's done right, part numbers and other purposeful stampings will also still show just like they do when you spray bomb it, as will all imperfections in the metal. I've made my living highlighting the ones that were intentional.

Though sandable powder primer is more common in the industry, using a color as filler can work on very light / minimal pitting but it usually takes a lot more than just one coat to do much. If that second to last photo you posted is a close up of the worst of it, the fact it doesn't show when installed balances how your guy handled it versus my personal inner "**** Virgo perfectionist" who would be inclined to use high temp metal filler instead ... mainly because I'd rather fix problems instead of using a BandAid to cover them up where they might later return. On steel, pitting is indicative of longterm moisture exposure, or dissimilar metals separating over time in pot metal. I'm sure your guy did a fine job and made sure it was very dry first.

Schooled by a professional, thank you! I can now have an intelligent conversation with my powder coater
