I went to fire up the 440 I just dropped in my 67 Belvedere and I fried the wire from the coil to the distributor. What would cause that?

Is it a point type dist ? Do you mean the small primary wire or are you talking about the coil secondary high tension wire ? Ron

If it is the wire from the points to the coil, make sure it is connected to the -ve terminal of the coil. If accidentally attached to the +ve side, it would have full voltage going to ground as soon as you turned the key.

Actually, I was hotwiring it. So it was getting full current directly from the battery to ignition side of the coil. I guess that wasn't a very good idea.

Yes, points system. And yes, the small wire from the coil to the points. Also, I was hotwiring it directly from the battery to the distributor side of the coil.

daytona71: Good call! Ain't this site great?

Yea like Daytona71 said if you have a wire from the battery to the neg side of the coil as soon as the points are closed............zap !!! That will be a dead short to ground. No load in the circuit as that needs to go through the ballast resistor and the coil primary winding first. But you have your answer as Daytona71 nailed it ! Ron
