From factory efi to aftermarket efi

After a few pcm tunes on the my 1996 Dodge Ram 5.9 Magnum engine, with a large cam, I just could not get the engine to run the way I wanted. I looked into several options, such as Holley Sniper, FI Tech, MSD Atomic, even Summit Racing brand, however I decided to go with FAST EZ efi. FAST was chosen because it is the most trusted brand among performance shops, and uses factory sensors, and has a DTC system. I have some video of the work being done, part 3 will be posted this weekend.

Cool, FYI all the brands you mentioned use factors sensors. And Holley has something similar to a dtc system. Fast is good **** though too

You are right about the DTC system, however the sensors are Holley specific. As Ramrunner will see many highway miles, I would hate to breakdown due to a TPS or something similar in the efi system, have to wait until Holley opens for business, and ship me a part. Also no telling how long Holley will support the Sniper series, I don't think they support the Avenger efi anymore.

For those that may want to know —- don’t need to go through Holley for any sensor, have all the spares (including 02) and cost me around $100.

FAST is a great kit but Holley will be supporting the Sniper for a very long time, it’s basically taking over the EFI market. Very few reasons to even go MPFI (aftermarket) anymore. The atomic and other systems really weren’t that popular to begin with, what the Sniper and other kits do now was not capable (proper self learning) five years ago. Five years ago, it was pretty much a standard to spend $600-$1000 tuning even a mild EFI setup on the dyno.

Not saying Holley would stop pushing the Sniper anytime soon, just not looking to be stuck on the side of the road, if I can hike to Autozone and get an LS map sensor should I need one. Seems Holley is mostly pushing HP EFI, which I'm sure it's great.

I don’t think someone can go wrong any way they choose, FAST / Atomic were some of the first systems, then FiTech for affordable units. Holley has the advantage of some of the best tuning software, from all the years of perfecting the Holley HP EFI ECU. Take a glance at my post above, all the sensors (for the Holley systems) are available at any auto parts store, same with FiTech or FAST.

I thought Holley used gm oem style sensors

They are OEM sensors ^^^ other than the wideband 02.

From what Holley told me at the Street Nationals, the were Holley only sensors, that is why I did not buy the Sniper efi kit. I do know FI Tech used GM sensors, but their tuning setup is a little clunky.

Well, Holley stretched the truth a little bit. Wouldn’t make sense for them to tell you otherwise, they do sell all the sensors under the ‘Holley’ brand as well, just with a bit of markup. That sensor information posted above is from one of the main techs on the Holley forums. Some guys found an NGK 02 sensor that may work as well, it’s an actual standard OEM unit so would be a bit easier to track down. The one Holley uses is similar to what most of the aftermarket companies are using for wideband 02 sensors, it’s not necessarily an OEM sensor for general production cars.

I get it, I believe what your saying, they just told me "just contact us if you need a replacement sensor", where FAST says in their marketing can use a readily available replacement GM sensor, which was a winner for me, as I am looking for reliability, and drivability. When I was talking to the people at the Holley booth, they didn't recommend the Sniper, they wanted me to use the Terminator EFI, or HP EFI.

Yeah, don’t take their recommendations seriously. They always will recommend the terminator, it’s a $2,100 system vs. $1,000 system. Sniper is relatively new, terminator has been around for a few years.
