Front Brake Drums/Swedged?

I am in the process of replacing the break drums/shoes on my 69, I have discovered the bearing hub which rides on the spline appears to be pressed to the drum . I just need to confirm that if i have the studs pressed out that this bearing hub will come free, or is there still more to separating the two?

Hey Marine , you do not have to press out the studs at all. Pull the grease cap off of the hub first. Then remove the cotter pin from the large nut. Remove spindle nut and washer. Now , with a tug on the brake drum from behind, the entire hub and drum assembly should come off. Just remember when reinstalling, to repack or replace the bearings, be sure to replace the inner seal if you do remove it. Hope that helps

If you are replacing the drums however , you will have to press or drive out the studs inorder to seperate them. That should be all that is holding it together. Be sure to replace the old studs with new ones. They should come with a plined shoulder on them so that they refit snugly.

I'm too cheap to replace the studs. In the past I have just taken a flat file and removed the swedged area on the stud and pop off the brake drum. A new drum will slide over the old studs and you should be good to go.

Why not upgrade to Disc Brakes??? Best upgrade there is....

Yes, I am replacing the drums thank you for the info. I have all brand new studs like you suggested. I just wanted to make sure that was all that needed to be done before I take them to have them pressed out.

Ive got all that. The issue is that the bearing hub which rides on the spindle is attached to the actual drum via the wheel studs unlike the rear drums where they are separate components. I have packed the bearings and have them set aside for when I can get the the these parts switched from the old to the new drums.
