I'm working on my front drum brakes, pulled it all apart to clean and repaint, and I noticed sandwiched between the spindle and back of drum plate there was a worn out thin paperish gasket, question is, is this gasket necessary on reassembly? If so where can I find just the gasket?

hmmm...dont ever remember seeing a paper gasket. pic?

Not completely necessary, but there for keeping the water out (of the splash shield). It is made of Styrofoam. You can get them here:

Well, crapballs... I got new ones, back in '88. I have not found them yet, but will post here when I do.

If you're driving it as a daily driver and are not worried about it being 100% original, you can cut a new one from a piece of thin gasket material, foam or use some RTV to seal the backing plate.

Thin white closed cell foam. I used a piece of throwaway section that came with my GTS gasket kit. Foam bags that electronics come in works well too.
