So, out for the first drive of the year yesterday, and by the time I got home, I had noticed a "clunk"-ing sound from the front end. I'm guessing it is steering related... sounded like it was coming from the front wheel area rather than further back.

Can anyone point me to where I might want to look once I get the car up and the wheels off?

I think it's probably time for a whole front end kit.

Thanks for any tips!

Personally I would start by doing a general check of the whole front suspension (ball joints, control arm bushings, Etc) and be sure to check your strut rod bushing as they can crack and split over time and give a similar noise.

when i bought my 70 RR there was an ANNOYING clunk/rattle coming from the passenger side front wheel well. looked and looked for weeks until i decided ...like you...time for a front end rebuild.

upon the dis-assembly of the entire front end, i was removing the front shocks when i found the culprit.
the pass . side front shock stem WAS NOT CENTERED in the shock tower,,,and was clanking and beating on the side of the hole the stem goes thru.....needless to say i rebuilt the ENTIREEEEE front end , and when i was done, the annoying rattle was gone.... check the shock towers and make sure the shock stems are in the middle then CRANK em down !

front end clunks can be anything from bad ball joints to missaligned parts to loose wheels.your gonna have to put it in the air and take a look to find out.i would check it out really well before you just rebuild it.its better to find what it is and not have the problem again.make sure to unload the suspention to check the ball joints.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'm back home next week, and should get a chance to have a look then.

The noise "clunked" in tune with the front tires rotating, but did not get worse - as far as I could tell - when I was steering one way or another. Other than a short jaunt last year, the car has been off the road for a good many years. Perhaps something dried up and seized, or something like that.

I'll have a look and will keep your advice in mind. Hopefully I can figure it out and fix it.

Cheers!
