I thought that too when I bought my '70. It only took a few weeks to change my mind. Now, I wouldn't pick a '69 model over my '70 or a '68. That open grille just looks amazing to me.
I have done things like that,and my wife just loved it!

Yes! Looks good to me. I just dropped a fresh 360 in my 77 Club Cab last week into this week. Corona project.

I love the grilles on the 77 and 78 Dodge trucks! To me, they are the best looking of the entire 72-93 body styles.

with my ol' beloved Lord Budnicks (RIP)
(never mind the date stamp is wrong)
& after it was 1st painted (I know the sun is brutal)
I didn't seem to see it bad thru the camera lens
& it's still before it was cut & buffed really
just had to get a couple shots, out in the daylight
it finally had some color on it, after 10 years of Ultra Flat Black
& it was like high noon 10-29-2017,
mid Nov. late fall day, it shouldn't have been all that bad
oh well
