Hello Guy,

I'm french owner of Plymouth Fury 64 with a 318A engine with at least a head gasket problem.
To fix this engine, I want replace the 318A engine by a 318LA for the time to fix my 318A.
This Fury is my daily car.
Do you know if it's possible? Some problem to solve: engine mount position? oil pan? TF727 mount? some think else?

Thank you for read my poor american language.

Fabrice

Pretty much a bolt in. Oil pan will most likely work depending what the later engine is from, at worst you can swap pan from the original engine. I had a 64 Dodge with a later 318 swapped in but I didn't do it myself. The later engine will bolt right up to the original push button automatic in the car.

Use the water pump from the A engine... lower hose comes out the other side, and it has the mount for power steering on it (if your car had power steering) and will need LA exhaust manifods or headers.. other than that it pretty much bolts in.

Double check the converter snout diameter to the crank diameter. Can't remember which ones had a small convetor pilot. If so just needs a sleeve to make up the difference. You may find slightly different motor mount bolt holes in the block.

Hi,

Thanks for your responses.
My car has power steering and power brake. So I'll check the water pump output.
The new LA engine will come without converter as it come for pickup with manual gear box. Maybe I'll need new flex plate? So I will check if diameter fits between new engine and my current TF727, with push buttons.
The engine I hope to buy will come with exhaust manifold.

The newer torque convertor will have a different input spline count than the pushbutton trans (I can't remember for sure but I think it changed in 67) , so best to use the original torque convertor, unless rebuilding the trans in which case you can easily change the front pump in the trans to a newer one as well.

Using the all the timing cover, water pump, ps & alternator brackets, and pulleys from the original A engine will simplify everything. The later engine has the timing tab and lower water outlet on the opposite side. The 64 converter and flex plate are fine as long as the converter pilot diameter is the same as the new crank internal diameter.

Hello all,

It's only a engine change. I will use the current converter and TF727 as they work fine.
OK so the main issue is the pilot diameter between the 64 converter and the new engine.

Thank a lot.
