I've got a feeling this is a broad problem across skilled trades. In the 42 years I worked in the bulk tanker business, much of my career left me stretched between the goal of passing my skills on to others, versus being called into action to complete a job the others couldn't perform. The last 20 years, I refused to train anyone, and charged extortion when the powers in place had no choice but to use my skills to get a job done.To often I've seen companies run machinists & highly skilled techs into the ground because they have jobs that need to get completed... Not realizing they should find someone capable of and enthusiastic about absorbing some of the skills & knowledge... Skilled senior machinists & technical people don't have time to pass on knowledge because they are often so loaded with work that needs to get out the door today & they lack the energy to put in more hours trying to teach someone who isn't smart enough to appreciate the gift of a technical education... In the modern world everyone wants a college degree & an IT job... Tech skills are severely under appreciated... As those skills become more rare things may change but once the skills are lost it's gonna be tough to get them back...
