Garage Squad

My garage squad is working pretty well ( if you ask me ) . . . that's me, alone, working on this project a little at a time, learning this stuff as I go along . . . and fixing the stuff that I messed up the first go-round . . . so far the thing is coming together pretty nicely . . . hopefully one day I'll actually be able to drive this thing . . . ( oh well - one day at a time )
And you will have a better car for the effort you put in.

I remember watching an episode of some reality Car Show where Kenny Wayne Shepherd had his Charger rebuilt. I'm fairly certain that the sides of the rear quarters were just pop riveted in place, then mudded over. Is that really how everyone rebuilds a car?
I know my panelbeater welded steel where steel was needed, and a bare skim coat over what was not quite perfect.

The show is OK I don't agree with putting old parts back on a car but the purpose is to get the car driving again not to restore it the guy can fix the brakes later . My car will never go together with crappy rusty parts but again it's a show guys because of it there's another charger on the road !
I think there is more needy people out there but I bet they want it done right that's why it isn't done yet! I wouldn't let them do my car ! Actually probably wouldn't let any tv show do my car! If you want it done right do it yourself!

I saw the mustang/63 galaxie episode
the 340 Challenger episode
the datsun z car episode
and a 50's truck episode.
All season 1 IIRC

Well I guess I was maybe a little hard on the show but I dont see patching up a ride just to get it rolling as doing the people a favor. Especially when they will be walking again very soon.

I like the show as it relates well with what I am doing. They do most everything in a real garage. No lifts, no gazillion dollar systems that some sponsor paid for, and just stuff that most everyday Joes have in their garage. Their goal is to get a car up and running, not do a concourse resto on it, and I think they do that very well.

They did a Super Bee this weekend, and I was laughing when they were putting the transmission in using a floor jack that was wobbling like crazy. Sure brought back memories from Easter weekend. :)

I did see them do one thing I questioned. The Super Bee was a 383 car that a previous owner had put a Hemi 4-speed in to. The car didn't need it, and I would have suggested to the owner that they sell that transmission and use that money to improve other aspects of the car. Reinstalling that Hemi trans was a waste of resources.

They only way to maximize profit out of the hemi four speed is to mate it with the original car. Other than that it is just an 18 spline trans...Which came in 440 RT/HD cars with the dana trac package and the only difference originally is a VIN stamp, bellhousing and throw out bearing. Since it was previously in the car he had the correct bellhousing for a 440/383...

Maybe they tried to snake the hemi 4 speed from the owner and he didnt want to give it away for all we know....Or they said we will trade you a 23 spline for the 18 spline? I think the guy knew what he had and it is his right to keep his parts...Plus he seemed very happy with what he had done overall...

Anyone notice the 69 charger hood on the super bee?

Have you been living under a rock for the past couple of decades? The Hemi nomenclature still adds a LOT to the value of part, whether it's for an originality issue or bragging rights. Perception is everything. :)

No rock just reality....I have had 3 actual vin stamped hemi trans...They are worth more than than a standard 18 spline...around 1000-1500k to the right buyer and some more if linked to a car but good luck finding that....keep in mind the right buyer.....

Once he would have bought a new 18/23 spline 4 speed, How much do you think he would have left over? Or would you gamble on a unkown and let the car sit in the garage like it did?

I thought it was a 68 Coronet hood. Will look closer next time it's on. They said the guy had the car for 23 years. You'd think he would have noticed the wrong hood in all those years. Or got it running, or set up the trans, or anything. I guess if you wait long enough, someone will do your work for you.

It all depends on your budget, which is one of the things I like about this show. I get so tired of seeing these shows where the hosts find some issue or another and voila! There suddenly appears boxes and boxes of brand new parts that have been provided in return for a promotional mention or two. That never happens in my garage, so I have to get by on what my budget will allow.

I bought a parts car for $800, got a great engine and rear end out of it, but the transmission failed. Was that a gamble? Yep. Could I have just ordered a new 727 from Summit and paid $1,500 to avoid the risk? Yep. Would that have busted the budget? Yep.

I see lots of good used trans for sale, most of them that were rebuilt for use in failed project, for $500 or so, so yeah... I would have sold off that Hemi trans, gotten $1,200 or so for it, bought a rebuilt trans for $500 or so, and would have had $700 to put towards something else.

$500 for a rebuilt a833 including getting a trans:rofl:

You laugh. :) I just got a rebuilt 727 ($1,200), with a Mancini Racing valve body ($389) and shift kit ($200), and a new 2,500 converter ($349), for $500 (plus $60 or so in gas to drive and get it). That's about $2,138 worth of hardware for $500.

And yes, I have seen a833s, rebuilt, listing for that amount. I'm guessing they're actually selling for less. My son's boss just bought one for $600 that was for a failed Charger project. Rebuilt, came with new clutch gear, bell housing, and the levers to connect to a pistol grip shifter.

You have seen junk listed for that amount...Lets be very clear on something that is professionally rebuilt versus a complete headache....Provide a current listing of a rebuilt one for sale in your pricing? I can provide listings showing my numbers are accurate and not some "shop" talk......Can you?
