Yet another issue with my 67 Coronet. I did not start nor move the car for the last 2 weeks. So today I went in the garage to start it up and take it for a drive. Look down to check the gauges and lo and behold the gas gauge wasn't working. It had 3/4 of a tank 2 weeks ago. Itried putting gas in it but the gauge still didn't move. Any ideas were to start looking for the problem ??

Very first thing to try is to unhook the sender wire at the tank and hook it to a good ground. Then turn on the key and watch the gauge. It should quickly shoot up and towards full. Do not leave it turned on longer than to see what is happening.

Is the temp gauge still working OK? They are both supplied power from the instrument voltage limiter, so if the limiter is good, the temp gauge should work

If the gauge does not move, it's time to pull the cluster

Yes the Temp gauge is working fine, and the gas gauge was working 2 weeks ago. So I will try the ground wire thing. Now if the gauge moves towards full, what would be my next move ?

if you ground it at the tank, and it whent to full, then the sender is bad or you have a bad conection at the tank.pull the sender and test it with an ohms meter.

before you go buying stuff you might not need look into this :

1. make sure the sending unit is grounded with CLEAN connections. ground goes from sending unit tube...to the fuel line via ground jumper clip....or to the frame or body.
2. pop off the drivers side kik panel and make sure the plug in there has clean connections.
3 wires to the fuel sender run along drivers side rocker under the sill plate.....under the back seat....into the trunk then to the sender....make sure those wires are in good condition.
4.under the dash should be a plug going to the circuit board....this is for the gauges...make sure all is clean.

if the temp gauge works....then the voltage limiter is WORKING....and you dont need one. 9 times out of 10 theres a bad ground or a dirty corroded connection SOMEPLACE... you just gotta know where to look !

I had the same problem this summer with my 66 belvedere. I reached up behind the dash and push the wiring connector that connects to the instrumentation cluster. The fuel gauge started working again. It's located on the left side of the cluster.

I had mine quit working on me a few months ago, It turned out to be a sunken float,
I was surprised by how easy it was to take out the sender, change the float and the sock and reinstall it.

Sending unit

I actually had the wire in the sending unit at the brass rivet break off at the end of the winding. Drilled out the rivet, re-placed, back in business.
