Have 1963 ply. bev. Question is : The gas tank pad that came off the tank looks like thick roofing felt ( tar paper ) . Was this O.E.M. ? Thanks

There is a reproduction fuel tank pad available in the "waffle" style material as the originals. It is much thinner than the originals, but you can take several and glue them together to make a very nice reproduction that is very close to the originals. The originals as mentioned above contained an asphalt coating which has been outlawed by the government. I would stay away from the foam style as it acts like a sponge between the tank and floor pan. That is one reason that the trunk pans are so bad rusting out on these old cars. For a cheap replacement, buy the thickest piece of tar paper you can locate.

This is what I bought for my '62 Dodge. Got it through Classic Industries. Thick soft rubber. Just got the first couple of threads started on the strap bolt by hand. Cranked it up the rest of the way with a wrench. It's not going to squeak!

Spray the area above the tank and the top of the tank with a good coating of truck bed liner. Won't hold water and wears like iron.

I used a layer of roofing underlayment that was left over from building our house. Sticky on one side and worked perfectly.
