Gas Tank Replacement

I'm replacing my fuel tank as many of you have. I got the thicker fuel sender retaining ring. I read the nightmares about the cheap thin one, so I'm good with that.

My question is about finishes of the tank and strap. I don't imagine the factory sent these cars out with any consistency. Was the tank left bare metal if it wasn't undercoated? Was the strap painted?

Besides having a mountain of dirt on my tank, it looks like it was undercoated. If I don't undercoat it, should I paint it? Leave it bare? I'd like to see photos of how your cars look, and hear what you have to say about the way Chrysler shipped them out. Thanks!

Tanks and straps were normally bare from factory. If dealer under coated it may have been sprayed or spotty. My original tank was bare and car was never under coated.

I got the retaining ring on eBay. I don't remember the seller, but it was recommended by members on this forum. All parts are not created equal. As mentioned in previous threads here, if you use the cheap thin ring, you are sure to have a leak.

No, its bare steel.

Undercoated is an understatement on my '62...

Bought the Spectra tank. Made in Canada...

Used the padding made by REM. It's thick soft rubber and just barely got the strap started on the install. I've heard of some just useing roofing tar paper. Several venders sell the REM pad.

I left the tank natural, painted the strap silver/aluminium...

Alrighty! I left the tank bare and painted the strap. I was going to leave the strap bare too, but it didn't clean up well, so I painted it.

Looks good. The strap would definitely rust without some kind of coating.

Weird stuff... I found these in the old tank. What the hell are they? Anyone else find these in their tank? I can think of two reasons they could be in there: 1 they are some sort of anodes put in by the factory or maybe the original owner (but I doubt it). 2 a kid put them in there. And even if a kid DID do something like this.... what the hell are they??? They are zink or lead and have what looks to be a letter M on them. A magnet won't stick to them.

O.k. that's wierd are they hollow I'M guessing they fit down the fuel neck and won't put in before the tank seam was done.

They are solid. Yeah they are small, like the diameter of a nickel.

I clear coated tank and strap before installation looks great.

Has anyone installed two straps? One fifty plus year old strap holding up a full tank at about 75 pounds or so just seems sketchy. Dont later b bodies have 2 straps?

The original straps were galvanized from the factory along with the tanks!
