George Jones won't be down for breakfast.

I met George at a small motel in Lakeland FL about 20 years ago.

I was there because I was working 2nd shift (well, 4-12:30) and had to go to traffic school the next morning at 7:00. The school was being held at that motel, and I happened to know the front desk person, so I thought rather than try to get up early and rush there, I'd just spend the night (got the room comped).

So I pull in around 1:30am (an hour drive from the Hotel I was working at), and there's this tour bus (and no other cars) in the parking lot.

I ask my friend who's bus it is, and she says "It's George Jones. He's in the bar right now, and will probably buy you a drink if go in there with him and talk. He's driving the bartender crazy".

So I spent the next hour or so drinking pretty heavily with George, and then in four hours went to traffic school, still fairly well sloshed.

That is an EXCELLENT story! ha ha ha
R.I.P George

Willie Nelson turns 80 Sunday. Happy b-day Willie!

Never cared for CW music and I never will which is surprising since I was born and raised in West Virginia. I lived about 2 miles from the WWVA AM 1170 transmitter, a 50,000 watt CW station in Wheeling.

I do like country. i also like metal. George is the real deal. Drink a bottle of Jack and play he stopped loving her today. It will bring a tear to your eye. Not all the oldies are gone though. George Straits still going strong and Hank jr. too

George will be missed. He was one of my dads favorite. Whenever I hear one of the old country songs, it always reminds me of the times with my dad growing up. R.I.P. George.

I am California born and raised, but my parents are from Cody, Wyoming and always had either old time country or 50's rock and roll on the radio. I can't really stand current country music from 1990 on up, but have always liked the older stuff. I like a little bit of everything from blues to rock to funk to soul and even international music like flamenco and indian sitar. Music has so many possibilities!

Nobody sounds like George Jones. His voice is unmistakeable. We still got David Allan Coe. He puts on a helluva live show if you can get past the occasional songs with bad language.

I love Junior Brown too. Seen him live a half dozen times and if you haven't then make a point to. That mans guitar playing will blow your mind - country pickin, surf guitar, blues, and Hendrix. He can do it all with that custom Guit-steel telecaster steel slide combo guitar he built. Love his big funny lookin cowboy hat and Barney Fife bug eyes too and his wife backs him up on rhythm guitar.

Sorry, this was about George. Rest in peace. You will be missed and we will continue to love your songs.

Old Possum made it to 81 tho. I used to be a captive to his music when I was in my teens. Dad was dragging my butt to work with him everyday when he was building houses in the 60's and he was a fan of his. I like some country music and some of his too but one of the guys I like a lot is Junior Brown. I like that kind of country....progressive country I guess it's callled. My Wife Thinks You're Dead a cut that I like....

Me too. My dad used to whistle to his songs on the radio during road trips in the car.

RIP George..... Sad to see another one of the "Real" Country music legends pass.....I agree with you other guys. Good music, not all that "let's go to the mall" or "everyone sing about Bud Light" garbage they play on the country radio now days..sux

You know this whole world is full of singers

I believe there's a trailer park named "Tammy-ville" somewhere around the Lakeland area.

Local legend has it that it's the first piece of real estate he bought.....
