I need to update my tank because it started leaking and was looking to buy a new maybe with an in tank fuel pump. I am not ready to do the EFI just yet but wondering if I could prepare by buying a new tank with one in already.
Can I just bypass my mechanical fuel pump and how is this done? Right now I have a carb on there.

I have been working on a little project to utilize an intake pump and sender from a foxbody mustang in a stainless tank I recently purchased for my 69 Charger. The sender fits the opening of the tank like it was made for it, the locating tabs are even clocked to the same position and angle of separation. I combined the sender with a fuel strainer from a Probe/Escort (part# F241S). It fits remarkably well. I combined this with a fuel pressure regulator in the engine compartment to knock it down to 6.5 psi. Got it all installed and hooked up this weekend and everything seems to be working.

Have you tested it as to if it works with the factory gauge?

An EFI pump needs a pressure regulator to use with a carb, you probably know. If you get a tank that uses a stock pickup save and re-use your old lock ring if it's in good shape. After market ring tend to be thinner, which has b

You can use any sender from an 86-93 Mustang. Fuel Pump/Sender Combo
-As for the pumps, you can get them in all sorts of sizes between 85 to 340 LPH. I would stay away from the big pumps until you are ready to do the EFI.

As for the regulator, I used THIS universal unit but can't recommend it. Stick with a holley or other name-brand bypass/return unit.

My charger had a 5/16 fuel line for a small block, so I added a new 3/8 line as a supply to the carb and left the old line in place as the return.

IMPORTANT CAVEAT: ...and potential deal breaker. You will have to attach your current fuel gauge sender to the new one or adapt a universal to retain the use of the stock gauge.

To answer your first question, yes, you can just disconnect the stock pump and let it hang in the breeze or you could remove it and install a block off plate to cover the hole. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/...MIsZ_A3OOG2wIVleDICh0miAvWEAQYASABEgJT8fD_BwE
