We took the intake off the motor last week because at the end of the season #7 intake rocker wouldn't stay in adjustment. We not only found #7 intake roller lifter was junk. I had to heat the block to get it out of the lifer bore then found the roller bearing was junk. I don't know how it didn't come apart in mid run.

In more inspection we found #2 Intake Spring had a broken inner spring...(it was missing about a 1/4 of a coil. (that's the only reason I could see it with the springs installed.:eek:

Also found #4 exhaust valve seal was destroyed and there were chunks of it jammed in the coils not to mention the steel part of the seal was lying in the bottom of the head.:eek::eek:

I didn't mention that all of these parts were brand new at the start of last season. They didn't have but 54 passes on them.

When I leaked the motor down the first time through I was getting funky readings but when I did it again all cylinders but #7 leaked in the 90's..#7 leaked in the 80's for some reason.

We pulled the heads and found everything ok. A few minor scratches in the bottom side of the cylinder, which I think they’ve been there a while because they didn’t look fresh, the tops of the pistons had no damage either. I can’t believe it.

WOW.... we went 9.68 with this all going on in the motor. Thank GOD it rained out at Monster Mopars this year (sorry Josh) or we would probably have taken the motor home in a box.

The reason we had the motor freshen up last winter was so we didn't have these problems.

There is a lot to be said for running the valves and leaking the motor down between races. If I hadn’t been keep records we would have never noticed there was something going on.

Well it just goes to show ya...... It's always something!!

Holy Crap!!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Ma never had the best panel fit....

but the Her Iron was always the best!!

the MoPar Gods were def. with you this year!!! :hello2::hello2:

You were lucky for sure... Good to see you caught it in time, well at least before it destroyed your whole engine, leak down testing is a great tool to see were your engine is, or if you have a potential problem, starting to rear its ugly head... I'll bet you keep an close eye on the rockers, push rods, springs, valve lash & leak down in the future...

who's or what brand of lifters & springs were you using ??

You bet! I do a leak down and run the valves after just about every race... unless we have a back to back week. The motor was leaking down ok, it hasn't leaked down as good this past year as it did after the last rebuild. I don't think the rings ever seated as well as they did before.

We're running Comp 947 springs 304@ the seat and 848 open.
The Lifters are Comp 829's

Do you think any of the problem was started at Beaver Nostalgia race last year?

Do you think any of the problem was started at Beaver Nostalgia race last year?

The valve adjustment started after Martin which was two races after the Beav.
I had been setting them @ .023 cold and when I ran them after the Martin Mi. race #7int. was @ .026 which was odd but not alarming.
Then after the Mopars I checked them and they wre at .030. I knew something was going on so before Norwalk I checked the Push Rod and it looked ok so I just changed out the adjuster beceause I've seen adjusters go bad and caused the adjustment to move. I had suspected the lifters but then again I passed it off because they on had 32 passes on them.
After Norwalk #7 was lose again. I tried to get him to stay home from Indy but you know Joe... Let's just say I was holding me breath with every pass. Again...Thank God it rained for our sake.

Kev,I had a few 829's go bad with slightly less spring pressure than you run.Time to step up the the better lifters:glasses9:

Ouch! That looks painful.

How many runs were on them?

I know we need to step up. We were going to but the last set up 829's lasted through 2 rebuilds, they had three seasons on them between the last rebuild and being replaced last year. I couldn't complain about that so we elected to go with em again.

So this got better.

We found 2 more broken Comp inner valve springs for a total of 3 and 4 valve seals that came off which the one was chewed up and found more pieces of viton and metal in the pan.
Sent the Comp rollers back to get rebuilt and they said that 3 of the 16 were total shot and couldn’t be rebuilt.... there were 55 passes on these lifters and valve springs for that matter.
We're done with Comp valve springs, PAC makes a spring that is identical to the Comp 947's and PAC is made in the USA.
We're going to stick with the comp Rollers until we can come up with the money to buy Isky Red Zone's (hopefully by mid season)

I pulled #7 rod cap to see what the bearing looks like and it looked ok to me, no scratches so I put it back on and will bolt the pan back on.

Please remember I street drive my car alot, the last set of 829's made 1000 miles, not even 1 season:angryfire:
I have heard of several guys that had good luck with the 829's but more that did not. They do not stand up to the higher spring pressures.I tried to go with with RED ZONES.The Iskeys were a nightmare for ME,NO MORE ISKY PRODUCTS:thebirdman: FOR ME !!Went back to the comp 848 with EDM & pushrod oiling capability,3 years and about 10,000 mile later send them in to be freshened:blob1:

The last set of 829's we had were around 5 years old and had been rebuilt after the first two years, we put 3 more seasons on them and when we had the motor rebuilt we stuck with the Comps and just bought a new set.
I think Comp has outsourced a lot of their material and parts. All I can say is we're done with Comp.

Anyone run Howards stuff? It looks pretty nice.
