knew a guy that ordered a stage 3 max wedge 63 fury , waited all summer on it , the dealer couldn't get it started , even by pulling it , it would just slide the tires , they told him to come and get it ,or they`d give his $ back , he took 4-5 of his buddies (big guys) and had them sit on the back of the car , he had another pull it while he dropped the clutch in 3rd gear to get it started , they didn't make tires to hold that thing back then !!!That's what I tell people, you could walk into your friendly neighborhood Plymouth or Dodge dealer and order a 3200 pound car with 425 horsepower and the salesman would say "Thank you for your deposit, see you in 6 or 8 weeks"!
I had a 66 hemi belvedere at the time , tho not a factory car , on the way home from work , (as a plumbers helper) , I saw a 70 hemi barracuda on a car lot about 3 blocks from my house , looked brand new , stopped and looked , had 11,000 miles on it , I wanted that car so bad I could taste it , But on a helpers wages and a kid , knew I couldn't afford it.....SAD !When I ordered my 68 Road Runner for $3000, Dealer had GTX Hemi on the floor and offered it to me for $3600. I had 9 more months of military duty and was commuting every weekend from Dover Del. to NYC for 180 miles one way. The 383 wasn't too bad on MPG, but I know the hemi would be a killer.
Talk about a Factory Hot Rod. With a $180 paycheck a month and a $90 a month loan, I couldn't afford a Hemi, and who knew Govt. would kill the Muscle Car era.
