I need to pull my front cover to clean and detail and same with the harmonic balancer. I was wondering where to get the proper puller and install tools? I know some guys tap it on with a hammer but as far as I am concerned thats just asking for bearing problems.

I know some of you guys here have either had to do it or do it on a regular basis so fill me in please.

Summit sells some nice options. Also too, I always hone all of the ones I've ever installed so it's almost a slip fit. Makes it much easier to install and remove.

Kevin, you need a 3 jaw puller to get it off, and then the proper install tool to get it back on.

I like this one better. It's the one I have.

You might can get by with a 3 jaw puller. But if the balancer is solid in the center.....as Mopar balancers are, you will have to pull from the outside diameter. A lot of times the outer ring will pull off the hub instead of pulling the entire balancer. The Summit tool pulls from the center hub bolt holes. It has the correct installation tool, too.

If this is going to be a one time thing for you go to your auto parts store and rent the tools to do the job. oreillys rents tools and i think it is free....... it will save you some cash......

That's a good idea, Snoman. Since I work on stuff all the time, I try to keep what I need on hand, so I normally don't think about renting or borrowing.

Guys, I'm sure the OP is talking about his 5.7 hemi since this thread is in the "new hemi swaps". All factory 3g hemi's use a 3 jaw puller which pulls from the center hub and then the proper install tool to put it back on.

Regardless of the engine design, but pulling on the outer ring of a harmonic balancer that is separated from the hub by rubber you are asking for problems.

You genius. LOL I didn't even pay attention. heh. My apologies.

Meep-Meep, I totally agree with ya.

On the back side of the inner hub, there are 3 notches/flats where the jaws can grab.

Thanks for the responses. I know how to get it off, it is the same procedure as it was on my 4.7L. The problem comes when going to put it back on. I believe the tool is the same as the 4.7 which all 3 local parts stores did not have the proper tool for rent. I ended up having to convince a tech at a local dealer to let me borrow his personal tool. Guy was super nice for letting me and trusting.

I was mostly looking for an inexpensive option for an install tool. I may end up buying a piece of threaded rod to make an install tool out of.... but last time I priced it out the rod was pretty pricey.

Thank you for all the input so far.

Well I ended up getting it on. I gently tapped it with my rubber mallet to get it to start and was able to catch enough threads to carefully pull it on. I tried the local parts store for the kit but the universal kits don't come with enough thread on them. Wasn't my preferred method but I didn't hit it any harder then you would to seat bearings when doing a rebuild so it should be just fine.

I made my own from a long bolt,a huge washer and a roller bearing to make the last few turns a little easier.:headbang: 4.2.11 (8).jpg4.2.11 (7).jpg

Believe me I wanted to do the same thing. I went to 4 stores and nobody carries an M14 x 1.5 thread around 5 inches long.....nobody. Except Fastenal and they closed up shop. So short of doing like I had to do last time and borrow one from the local dodge dealer (no way id get somebody to loan it to me now) this was about all I had without having to order the $100 tool.
