HD727 Stock Torque Converter RPM?

why 4A? that cam probably has 4 degrees advance already ground into it. some of those 4A marks on the gears are 4 crank degrees which equals 8 cam degrees. do you have 12 degrees advance on the cam? maybe! you need to degree that cam in. that cam is fairly small for a stroker and shouldn't much converter.

4a is what a Mopar builder told me at the time, since this is my first 440 I asked what to do. this was before we bought the cam. degreeing the cam at this point aint gunna happen since the engine is in the car and likely not coming out anytime soon. So I am stuck with what I got I guess. The cam was picked after talking to comp cams and telling them what I had and what it was set for i.e. street.

Advancing your cam timing has the effect of moving the power band lower in the RPM range...which is good for a street engine.
In the timing department, I'm running 13 degrees static advance BTDC, additional 24 degrees mechanical advance starting at 1200 RPM and all in by 2400 RPM, and vacuum advance attached to full time vacuum port. I've adjusted the vacuum canister to not advance until fairly high vacuum. This vacuum advance helps the engine run cooler at idle and get better fuel mileage in cruise condition.
When you say your idle crashes when you put it in gear, what's happening ?

Could you have a simple vacuum leak? I just went through this with one of my built 318s.
Had to set idle over 1K in order to not die when putting it in drive. Checked/replced at the hoses and tightened the carb baseplate, now idles about 750 in P/N and 550-600 in D.

that cam has 4 degrees of advance ground into it plus the extra 4 degrees (minimun) from the crank gear. 8 degrees is too much for that short intake lobe.

...4 degrees crank advance is nothing...particularly at idle...as previously stated the advance simply moves power band down the rpm range..good for a street engine you don't want to rev....

Well she idles in park well once warm, There is no vacuum at all on this motor as far as distrib vac or brakes etc..the manifold does produce vac i have not metered it yet. The main problem is idle in drive after the tranny fluid has warmed up you can feel the stock torque converter wanting to push and go and it feels like a 1000-1400 stock stall. I think I am just going to get a little looser stall maybe 1800-2000 and see what happens if the idles is still **** after that then I will focus on the eddy 800 avs if it still is **** I will replace the carb first if that fails then I will pull the motor and degree the cam like it's supposed to be and go from there. Hoping to make a new video of it idling this weekend. Going to take it over to the tranny shop this weekend and see if I can get some free advice! :)

curious? does that mean that I was right when I set this motor up to be a torque monster? when I was building it or at the time deciding on what to get and how to set it up I was told to use the 4a, the conversation must have been about max torque when someone told me to do that. It just made sense at the time I was not thinking about idle characteristics at the time since I didn't have a car yet lol. Funny how you start to remember the little things once you have issues. I have been breaking the engine in and now after a few hundred miles you can feel the motor has loosened up, we were out today and I took it up to 5k in 2ND and it could have gone to 6 easily so far I have not been able to find its high point! as far as that goes I have not even been able to open the secondary s yet :) now that she is past her first oil change and plug change I will start to feel her out more :) just don't tell my wife :) I have my 6AL box set for 6k rev limit so if she pops over cuz I am out of control then at least it will cut off. The motor feels like it will pull and pull and pull as soon as I can get things dialed in perfect I think she will be a street monster :)

Long winded I know sorry, but last thing for all you guys who have chimed in and help me with your advice I can't say enough thank yous....so thank thank thank you! :pink banana:
