Are you also blowing fuses at the box?..You will be required to do some trackin’ down... A short in the electrical system possible a short to ground....Need to do a voltage drop test on any questionable section of wire....Main failure points to check.the bulkhead connector, ammeter connections...The battery to firewall connector ...Check charging system for over charge....alternator could be shorted-out...the diodes inside the alternator ...Try disconecting your Amp gauge and see what happens.
You should give us more history- did it ever run smooth? Did you recently convert to electronic ignition? What has been done to the motor? How long ago? Has the charging system been upgraded? Does it smooth out at high RPMs?
It was upgraded awhile ago to electronic ignition. I purchased a new voltage regulator, ballast resistor, electronic ignition box, coil, and alternator. It was running good, then then it starting poping the fuseable link.
It just started to sputter today when I was looking for the problem. The volt gauge is new, and when you to the key to the on position it dumps in the negative. You have to jump the terminals on the back of the volt gauge to start it and they cook. I yanked the harness out from underneath the dash and nothing appears to have gotten hot. I don't get it.
I have decided to just junk the dash and put in the superbee dash frame I have with the rallye cluster. I just need a harness.
