Yeah, it is a money pit, but I'm not upset by it, that's just the way it is with us Moparheads, right? I rescued/adopted this one back in January because it is a hardtop with ps, pb, and factory air. The good: tinted glass, straight/solid frame, complete car, good door panels and seats already upholstered. The bad: rusty floors and trunk, stuck motor. At 54, I've never taken on this level of project, but with encouragement from friends and a great parts man, I started by removing/replacing the entire floor pan. Had the tank boiled and ran new 3/8 inch fuel lines. Removed the poly 318/cable shifted (column) automatic, installed LA 318/727 from an '87 1/2 ton pickup, fabricated motor and trans mounts from scratch. New oil, fuel, and water pumps, new Petronix distributor, Edelbrock 600cfm electric choke carb on Edelbrock Torker 840 intake. New brakes from master cylinder out. B & M Z-gate shifter. Steering wheel from '68 Coronet.
What's left? Exhaust, headliner, install carpet, then the big one--body and paint. That last will have to wait until next summer when the play money account recovers. For now, I need some exhaust advice. The factory truck manifolds won't work by a long shot and I've looked all over the internet for other SB manifolds that dump far enough to the rear to avoid the steering box, starter, and steering linkage.
Other places on the Forums, I read that later A-body headers will work. After looking at the photos, I have a tough time seeing them in my car. Doug's Headers has a set just right for my application (D453), but there's a big but: "not for use with 727 transmission". ????. Also, I would have to install a mini-starter. And come up with $673 (uncoated headers = $491). I've left messages with the Doug's techs asking what the problem is with the 727; linkage? No reply yet and I'm getting impatient. So, let's hear it. Who's been here before? I know you're out there......and thanks!:eusa_think:
