My 1969 Roadrunner 440 with a 727 is leaking trans fluid in front of the transmission, where the engine and trans meet. It is heavy leakage at acceleration when I put the car in drive, but a slow drip when it is in park and engine running. No trans leak when the car is off. If you have any idea what the problem is, please respond. So I can get the bird back on the road.

Sounds like the front seal. Worst case sernario, a cracked torque converter. Has the engine and trans been apart recently? Is it a factory torque converter?

have you had the tranny out recent or changed torque converters?

seals, take it to a tranny shop rr the trans for about $400 out here for seals or new torque converter and seals depends.

Leaking trans

Also check the front pump...

Sometimes they crack at the "screw in" holes where you mount the puller...

I've seen where they have stripped out the treads and enlarged the holes and they crack through to the seal that runs around the out side of the pump...

Just a thought...

The vent is in the front pump, be sure your fluid level is correct and not over filled. Pull the dipstick out of the tube and see if the leak stops or slows way down. The fact that it only leaks while running indicates vent, front pump bushing/seal or converter as these items are under pressure only when running, especially in gear.

To my knowledge the trans has not been rebuilt. Did I mention one day prior to the leak I was brake torqueing and fish tailing at a car show.If its a seal or cracked torque converter, can it be easily fixed by a citizen with a tool box and 3ton jack stand? Mr. Transmission wanted $340 to remove the trans and find the problem. Then I would have to pay for the parts and repair labor( the time removing the broken part and adding the new one) once the problem is found. Any DIY 727 repair links or guides available?

727's fill the T/C in neutral and in gear, not in park. Thats the whole 'check in neutral' on the stick thing.... The input shaft seal is a pretty good bet - though I would see what it does with the engine off, they usually still leak. As for a guide, Torqueflite Patty on Ebay used to sell the factory service manual, its cheap, and a bit too much info on Lockup converters, but accurate. To properly change the front seal, you must pull the trans, pull the pump, knock it out from the backside, and 'press' in the new one. Hope this helps, good luck.

I would bet the front seal too. $15 seal at Advance, a tranny shop will probably charge you $400 to put it in........

Ok thanks for the advice. I am off to the trans shop. I will post results later.
