Guys I just can't get enough air into my motor. It's a 493 stroker with stock Eddy RPM heads and a Quickfuel 850 carb. I bought a simple dropped base 14 inch by 3" high air cleaner to try, and the car is noticably slower than running with the huge 16" by 4" cleaner that i stuck on temporarily before i put the hood back on.

I was at a show(up) kind of event on Saturday and revved the engine with the hood up for a bunch of guys. Everyone said "Holy cow! That engine's gonna such the whole air cleaner in!"

I had someone rev it for me, and you can actually see the air filter fighting not to get swallowed!

All I'm using is a cheap paper filter. Do I need to go to a bigger diameter (16")? Or a different kind of filter? I can't really go any taller - already basically rubbing on the hood insulation. I don't think that one of those "filter top" type elements will help much as the top would be rubbing on the inside of the hood anyway - not likely to get much air through there.

Thoughts on high flow air filter setups for motors under a stock hood?

Thanks,

Greg

Try larger diameter and something besides paper. Stay away from the foam type, they brake down and get sucked into the intake.

have you thought about one of these? it's what i run on my car. no restrictions whatsoever. F14603038.jpg

69 that's what I was thinking about, but the lid is effectively rubbing on the hood insulation pad, so I'm not sure I'd get any air in the top anyway. Maybe I shiuld take the pad off the inside of the hood. Probably doesn't do anything anyway...

Look at the air cleaner this member has on his engine, this may be what you need.

Last picture shows what he is running.

Hey 66 do you mean the oval-type air cleaner? That's a stock Mopar right? I'd love to run one of those - big AND cool, but where do they come from aftermarket, and aren't they for 6 packs?

Hey Red: Blower? Now that would be cool. Procharger type means no hole in the hood!

Yes, the oval air cleaner is an original Mopar style. You are correct in that they were used on 6-pack setups, but they were also used on a whole LOT of single four barrels in the '69 & '70 AIRGRABBER (Plymouth version) and RAMCHARGER (Dodge version) setups on Super Bees, R/T's, Road Runners, GTX's, Superbirds, Daytona's, to name a few.

You can get an aftermarket reproduction from several places, I got one from BE&A parts. If you get one, the version made for a 440 is about 3/4" lower than the version made for the 383's. You may want to get the 440 version if you are having clearance issues with your hood.

Check them out here. You can call and talk to Mike Ross about what you need.

Another thing that might help is to use a K&N low restriction filter with that Ramcharger air cleaner, that way you get more surface area plus lower air restriction through the filter.

Could always roll Two-lane Blacktop style!

More realistically i would go with a K&N. Gause filters are reusable and less restrictive. With less restriction you should have less force pulling against the filter and will probably solve the "sucking in" problem. Might not even need to get a bigger housing.

Wow. Spendy but BEAUTIFUL!

Maybe I'll try a gauze filter to start and go with that BEA one if it doesn't work.

Thanks boys...

Figure out what you need and post it here. I've got a couple filters I ordered when I was figuring things out and won't be using them. (Cheap cheap).

E3027R and E3737 are both round 14" by 3" high filters. These would fit the bill for the first test - to see if I can simply run my existing air cleaner but with a better quality filter to replace the junky paper one which came with it.

Would you happen to have one of those?

I had the same problem It would fall on its face when I stomped the gas I went to a K&N and it solve the problem

I'll be following this thread for sure. Not sure if I'm going to have any clearance hood issues in my RR when I love the 383 for a 440 with an Edelbrock intake (RPM I believe) I was hoping to sue my oval cleaner on the car now but if it won't fit I like the look of the K&N X-Stream one pictured.

Hey Goon I'm trying to post a pic of my setup cause I think it's like yours, but i'm stuck on my iPad and can't make it work without a mouse. You can look on my "80 Grit" thread if you wanna see the pix. It's gotta be a pretty standard problem.

I'm hoping copper67440 might have a "used" filter for me in his stock of spares...

if using a drop base air cleaner and a diff height filter make sure you have enough clearance from the air horn(top of carb)to the inside top of the air cleaner.have seen that cut down to almost nothing and people have a hell of a time figuring out the problem.3 inch minimum air filter height with a drop base filter housing.

Grabinov you're absolutely right are setups are very similar from what I see in your 80 Grit thread. I thought we might be ok with clearance/fitment because I know we have a bit more room than Chargers but It's that tall intake that's messing with us!

Off topic what make are those pulley's on your new engine I didn't see that where you listed the specs?

Good luck on the "used" filter and I wish mine was a bit further along so I could fill you in if I had found a solution but my Motor is still a month away from being done I'm guessing

So here's my new setup (with thanks to 69roadr for the suggestion). It's a Spectre 14" by 3" filter with a dropped base. The base itself has indentations in it to get around (over) the fuel bowls on the carb, and I had to "relieve" these even more with a ball peen hammer to fit over the high screws on the top of my Quickfuel fuel bowls. Didn't take much though.

I checked the inside clearance based on 67Coronet's suggestions and there is still about 1.5" between the top of the carb and the inside of the filter lid. Good thought too. I can imagine guys restrict that space down to a half inch or so (with a 2" high filter) and would NEVER figure out the problem! We'll see if this one survives the Mighty Mopar Vaccuum...

Goon that's a Sanden air conditioning compressor with a Mopar-style dual-belt pulley. It's there to replace the factory compressor which is like having a Harley Davidson sitting on top of your engine. You can see that I don't have it plumbed into the A/C yet. On factory A/C cars there is no way to replace the compressor with an idler pulley (no one makes one) or to modify the pulley system to run without the compressor without changing out the crank pulley, the alternator pulley and the power steering pulley also. They are a set so you are either an A/C car or a non-A/C car.

The compressor is from Bouchillon Performance (great guys - Randy and his son Randy - on the internet) as is the mount setup to mate it to the existing factory brackets. The other pulleys are stock. That's a Bouchillon kickdown cable as well under the carb there, and their bracket. Replaces the factory monkey-motion linkage with all the joints and pivots.

And an A.R.E. throttle return spring bracket from Hughes Engines - which I painted Allis Chalmers orange. Don't tell anyone.

Oh, and because it took me FOREVER to figure out what to use and every engine seems to be different, here's a favor (I hope): Those are Billet Specialties spark plug wire holders (the metal ones on the valve cover http://www.jegs.com/i/Billet+Specialties/135/69782/10002/-1).

My poor wiper motor is starting to feel really neglected in there. I started to pull it out the other day, but it's really hard with the engine in there - go figure...

Thanks Greg!

I have had my eye on the exact same filter... If my stock coyote duster oval won't go back in place that's exactly what I'm shooting for. Also good to know about the Quickfuel Bowls as I'm using a QF with the new crate also.

I've saved this thread to my favorite's section for future reference! (along with your "they want me to what! thread lol)

Everything under your hood looks sharp man and thanks for the additional info. I don't have AC so won't have to worry about that but I there's a good chance I'm going to grab up some of those wire looms!
