Hi Guys... anyone around the Sacramento area? I got a 72 Roadrunner clone but wiring sucks. I thought about painless wiring but I need major help. Currently its all a mess, when you rev, the voltage regulator needle goes up and down, signals are not working and when I pressed on the gas, the headlights blew. I can do the wiring but the previous owner tweaked everything so I am little lost as to which wire is for which.. any help will be greatly appreciated:confused:

you may have a bad voltage regulator as your only problem if its not regulating and keeping the voltage at around 14 when running that could be why your headlights blew you rev the motor the alt produces higher voltage at higher rpms (if the reg dont work) which to much voltage will take out your headlights and possible other items as well

Do the basics. Check each system individually. Start with the battery and charging system and work your way out from there. People tend to get confused and think that they need to tackle the whole thing at once. Morbid is right, check your regulator. Fix the charging circuit first. Then check your headlights. The lamps themselves may not be "blown", could be the breaker in your headlight switch was overloaded and burned out. Fix that problem and then go for the turn signals. Could just be a fuse or the flasher is burned out. Just take it slow, and methodical.

I ordered a new voltage regulator... should be here in couple days from summit.
Also, does anyone have wiring diagram for a 72 setallite? Mines a 72 roadrunner as I mentioned. Maybe the wiring diagram is what I need :(

Hi guys.. I just put a bran new voltage regulator and still when i give gas, the alt meter goes up and down... does the voltage regulator need a solid ground?

Could my alternator be giving up on me? I don't want to buy the alternator yet without eing certain....DAMN Any MOPAR gurus around Sacramento..

I guess it could be but if your's is, then so is the new one on my Duster. While charging the battery, the aftermarket ammeter swings pretty wildly. Once the battery is charged it pretty well settles down.

Interestingly, the O.E. ammeter metered out good, but it doesn't move one iota

Hmm interesting... My Battery is pretty weak and I have to jump it to start... maybe that could be the issue but then why would the alt meter jump when I give gas or rev?

this also happens when I drive the car around, I am guessing by then the battery and alternator should be pretty well ready so why would that still jump?
Does yours jump while driving?

until the battery is charged up, yes. Wish the O.E. gauge was working so I could see what it was doing. Could be the aftermarket ammeter (Summit gauge) is so sensitive it just flops around like that. Could be "normal" for that gauge

If you have to jump start the car shortly after driving it, then your battery is likely shot. That would explain the ammeter jumping wildly while driving, since the charging system is trying to force a charge into the battery, but the battery isn't taking it. Try a battery that you know is good and see if the ammeter is still jumping around after the car has been running for a while (long enough to top off the battery charge.)

ok I will be going home early today to buy a New Battery. What Crank should I be looking at? 800 to a 1000???
I will let you guys know how that goes. I was told not to drive around if the alt meter jumps as it may kill other things in the car...

What I have in the Duster is a new group 27 battery that is (probably) 850 cca. But because of the aftermarket AM/FM/CD that is in it, there is a constant draw on the battery. So since I don't drive it every day, the battery is generally in need of some charging every time I drive it.

ok. Well Let me try that. I got the new VR in it, I don't want to buy new alternator just yet but do need the battery, hopefully that takes care of my problem. Though, why would my headlights blow out when I gave gas to the car when I was driving? It turned bright blue (assuming it got extra watts in it) and bam, just gone.
Did somehow the Alternator give extra power to the Voltage Regulator that couldn't handle it and just gave up? I apologize for the questions guys...

Questions are how we all learn things here. Course, some times we get info we'd rather not have :rolling:

My alt is new. Battery is new. Harness is new. Only thing that isn't is the VR.

One question (or refresh me if you already said) is the ammeter that's going wild in your car the O.E., or an aftermarket like in mine?
