Help needed to id strange block!

I found this fresh 426 Standard Bore block in my late
friend's Shop (Tri City Per next to a half dozen regular
426 Blocks. Greg (RIP) was one of the top Max Wedge engine
builders and racer for decades! A number of cars he built are
still nationally competitive right now. He also did all my machine
work for all my race cars for decades.

It has provisions for 4 bolt mains but does not have them.

It has support ribs everywhere I have never seen before
in 60 years of this stuff.

It is HEAVY and very Beefy!

can you post the casting numbers on the side of the block and also whatever might be stamped on the pad on top

That's weird the cross bolts/bosses, weren't machined or drilled
& has just 2 bolt main caps
Max Wedge (race block ?)
Replacement warrantee block maybe, unfinished to go to a machine shop (?)

Might be possible it was one of a limited run cast for racing only - just ended up being left behind.

I know Mattel Toys in China have a special Night Crew who make all sorts of "Factory Errors" and send them out as normal cars.
Then Collectors worldwide go into a frenzy trying to find them.

I have had several of these blocks before in both 413 and 440 displacements mostly removed from RV's and big trucks.

Definitely a tough looking block.

I too have seen those in 413 industrial blocks but this one has no date
code or identifying numbers and they all did. It also has some other features that I do not
recognise from the 4 of the 413 industrial blocks that I owned.

it is a possibility. I just have never seen a 426 Industrial block in
my years of racing Max wedges. I would have killed to have this in
my SS/DA 64 Savoy years ago!!

Yes, one of these would make a killer base for a 426 MW motor.

According to 440 Source, a 413 (4.188) Industrial block like this can be bored to use a 440 piston (4.320), so certainly a 426 (4.250) is very doable.

I have seen many in the HD trucks. We serviced a fleet of CT800 series trucks and they had these blocks. There were two versions. The 413-2 V8 was the normal casting and the 413-3 V8 was the HD Industrial blocks discussed here.

Any hint of the color the block was originally ?

I have seen a couple of industrial 426 blocks and they were painted red.

I never owned one so I don't have any numberd to go by.

But NO part # period......Just R6 on block.

I've had several 426 industrial blocks...but none had provisions for 4- bolt mains. All the 426 industrial blocks I had were from Marine applications. All had a casting number at rear of block by the oil sender...all had information stamped on the front pad. Here's some pics of one engine I have left...a 1966 version.

A local buddy always tells me he has a industrial block with provisions for 4-bolt...I guess I will try to get some pics if possible.

In the 90's I restored a one owner 65 coronet 500 426 4 speed that had one of those blocks in it with the cross bolt provision. Engine had a May 3 assembly date stamped in the pad. I showed Larry Shepard pictures of the cross bolt provision and he claimed those were a run of blocks intended for nascar while the hemi was banned. Larry also tried VERY hard to buy the block from the owner of the car.

Did truck and industrial engines all have solid lifters? Recent auction sale near me sold a Chrysler irrigation pump powered by 413 industrial.

No they do not...my 426 boat engine is the only one I've had with a solid cam and adjustable rockers. I've had a bunch of 413 industrial engines and all had hydraulic cams and normal rocker setups

This,,,and later mopar performance patterned the Mega blocks along the same lines as in having the cross bolt mounting bosses but not drilling them where as the blocks would not be legal for stock class racing......1 casting and they proceeded to machine it several differant ways....mine is cross bolted but the 1 at the machine shop waiting in the work queue was Not as shown..
