i was going to use a Viton rear seal on my 383 with stock cast crank. but now im hearing that in fact maybe a rope type seal should be used. I was told there are serated lines on the surface which is were the seal comes in contact with the crank. Although the lines in the crank are extremely fine what kind of seal do i need. Im confused (as usual)------thanks----------------BTW i was also going to use those silicon end strips

Use the seal from the gasket set, and don't sweat the small stuff. Rubber seals have been sealing all kinds of motors for years, even with serrated cranks.

btw, the serrations will not cut the seal as they are not raised. They merely direct the oil back into the motor.
