How much would it cost to build my own Hemi?
Other than the machine work I have built engines before.
Just not a Hemi.
I just want a reliable street engine that will look good under my hood.
Don't want a gen 1 or a new Hemi. Gen II, 426 and up.:eusa_think:
 
I love big power, but I don't race anymore.
Just cruise and car shows.

Probably be easier to just get a crate engine. You could probably save a few grand doing it yourself. Nothing special about putting one together compared to any other engine. But for some reason that little 4 letter name makes the price go up. I have been gathering parts to build my own. So far i have an aluminum block from keith black. Indy heads. Stroker kit to make it 472 inches, and 8-71 bds blower. Still need to get an oiling system and figure out the fuel system. What i have wrapped up in it so far is just silly. Luckily, my sister was good enough to marry a machinist. Or else this thing would cost me like 50 grand total. Were just about halfway there now
 
Finding an old Hemi isn't going to be the easiest thing in the world. And affording one is even worse. Then the cost to build one is going to be miserable. Buying a crate engine is the same scenario, only you get to pay for it all at once!
 
I've been piecing one together and so far have found the heads and valve train to be pricey. At this point I'd say don't even mess around with old heads as they are all cracked or patched up junk. There is a reason MoPar made new heads available. If you are not trying to put an original car together (that's what I'm doing) you can save some money by passing on certain year blocks and other parts like the dual quad intake with factory carbs.
 
I'm thinking real hard about buying a 572 Indy hemi.
They have them on sale.
Plus they are set-up and tuned.
More power than I really want, but you never have to much power!
 
I've got an Indy headed 526 going together right now that will be sold after it's done and dyno'd if you're interested.
