Big block Mopar is new to me, always dealt with small block, and it's a Hemi. So just discovered this in my '69 FPB. Looks like I installed the crankshaft oil slinger on the wrong side of the timing gear chain. On a 383-440, it looks like the cup side facing forward and front of timing gear. The 426 shows cup facing to the rear and on the backside of the timing gear. Which is it?
 
The slinger is supposed to keep oil away from the front seal. And it should not be in contact with the chain. So ... it goes on after the sprocket with one side flush to the sprocket and the "lip" facing the timing cover.
 
That is how I have it installed. First picture 383-440. Second 426. Just went into my FSM, didn't think that it would be there, but there it was, timing chain removal and install. Slinger goes on the outside, not the inside.

I think that sequence for the Hemi FSM must have been laid out on a Monday or Friday!

Thanks for the post on the oil slinger. For the hemi, can you tell by the exploded view what is the correct orientation for the slinger in the 426? Is that cup side oriented towards the front timing gear or towards the crank?
Im asking after looking at the diagram but its a bit difficult to discern .

Any help appreciated!

you better find a diff. book !!
Same as the 440,383.400 etc., all facing forward, if you turn it around backwards facing the chain, it`ll rub on the chain ....
 
Yes, all big blocks are the same. I have torn down several big blocks over the years that didn’t even have the singers installed. I always install them in my builds.
 
As I previously related on this site, I recall when the double lip seal was released by Chrysler and the engines so equipped had the slinger deleted.

My findings are the same. In theory, the slinger would just add another level of possibility of the crank gear moving.
 
The slinger is pressed between the chain drive sprocket and the hub of the damper, all which are bolted together and torqued to over 100 ft lbs. How can the slinger float?
