Hemi oil weight and brand

You guys that have stock Hemi cars, what brand and weight of oil are you using? Thanks

I am satisfied that I have answered my own question. I called a friend that races seriously every weekend a big block Chevy. All he runs is Pennzoil 25w50 oil. This is the only oil his engine builder told him to use.:icon_mrgreen:
 
Brad Penn grade 1 20w50. I wouldn't use pennzoil on anything except the kids' bicycle chains.
 
well, maybe as chainsaw chain oil or to help start the brush pile on fire.
 
Champion or Synergen 20/50.

I like the Champion semi synthetic hot rod oil in my 440-6.

Whatever floats your boat. My engine builder said he has had not one oil related engine failure due to oil usage. Larry Shepard is third generation engine builder and all have used Pennzoil and he most recently the multi grade 25w50 racing oil. Pennzoil is all real oil and Brad Penn, which is a good brand, is part synthetic, which he does not want in a newly built motor. Pennzoil he said also starts with a good amount of ZDDP in it. I also spoke with a neighbor who is a serious drag racer every weekend with a big block Chevey. He also uses nothing but Pennzoil 25w50 as recommended by the guy that built his motor. He uses ZDDP additive every other oil change. The engine has been torn down many times and shows NO wear on cam, lifters or any other metal to metal moving parts. Oil samples from his filters have shown almost no indication of wear, but of course there is a microscpic amount. He has raced this motor for five years. That is good enough for me.

You can't count that, they torn it down and most likely changed the bearings too.

Glad to hear your happy with your choice and it makes you happy, but don't badmouth another brand unless you have something to back it up with. All oils today are of quality materials. Just some have been around for a very long time and have done something right or they woud be long gone. Roger Penske NASCAR racing team as well as all his Indy cars use nothing but Pennzoil, so I guess they know a thing or two. So continue to lube your bicycle chains.

Funny, I always say I wouldn't use it on my door hinges. That stuff always had the tendency to sludge up, but maybe that's because the oil never got changed. I tore down a lot of engines that had a thick waxy buildup.
 
Brad Penn, forget the Chevrolets, please don't compare a hemi to chevrolet stuff. The Best Oil is Brad penn. Also Comp cams Break in Oil for new engines when you use a comp cams roller.
 
The sludge rumor back in the late 70s and early 80s wasn't a rumor. It was fact. That's the main thing that gave Quaker State a bad reputation. They were the ones mostly affected, although there was some of the oil that made it into other makes, but not as much. I've heard a couple of different versions. One, that a bacteria set up in the crude that made the oil sludge up and two, that additives somehow got mixed up and the wrong mixture was produced in refining. Either way, there was LOTS of oil that DID in fact cause sludging problems back then. I remember it very well. For the most part now though, any sludging produced is due to not changing the oil frequently enough.
 
The Pennsylvania oils (Pennzoil, Kendall, Quaker State, Brad Penn) were technically better oils as long as you kept up with them. The problem was though, many people didn't. Crude oil found in Pennsylvania is special oil. Unlike most oil that is asphalt based, PA oil is parrafin based. Regular crude oil is black in color, but PA crude oil is kind of a green color from the wax. Since it's parrafin based, when the oil wasn't changed regularly, it would start to break down and seperate leaving a waxy gunk all up in the engine. I've personally rebuilt a handful of older engines that greatly suffered from this. The reason people still used it though, was because the PA oil had a higher lubricity rating. As long as you maintained a good service schedule and would do the occasional flush, you'd be good to go. I don't remember the specific numbers, but back in the day, the lubricity value of PA oil was stupid high compared to conventional crude based oils. Higher lubricity value meant less friction which meant cooler temps, less wear, less hp loss. Most of that doesn't matter to a daily driver, but in the 1/4 mile, every little bit helps.

Bought time someone made an intelligent post. I have been running Kedall and Pennzoil since 1966 and never had a problem. Don't need an expensive botique oil with a bow. Brad Penn stands for Bradford, PA. It is still Kendall oil with a new name and a high price. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that is all it is.

I did back it up, I said and again slowly this time...

I have 450,000 miles on one motor , and it has been killer overheated 5 times , it also see's 15,000 mile oil intervals. . . . . . 4,000 miles on the filter.... (what gas motor do you or your friend or even roger penske have that uses oil at 15,000 mile intervals and is ANYWHERE near 450,000 miles and doesn't smoke or have loss of power and still gets more than 20mpg )

ALL you have is my friend changes his bearings after maybe 12 miles of use drag racing every year when they tear it down....

You also said NOTHING as for other brands...

You stick with roger penske and change your oil EVERY 500 miles and take the motor out EVERY 500 miles and be JUST like roger....

I think you're just fine runnin what you are. Larry Shepard. I mean really. Does any more than that need to be said? You know as well as I do that no matter what you do or where you go, you're going to run into one in every crowd that's done it all, seen it all and is willing to give an example of it around every turn. Thing about it, the more people like that spout off, the more everyone knows all they are are crapblowers. But you already had that figured out. Honestly, anybody spends six digits on a beautiful car such as yours ain't gonna be dumb about oil. ...and you aint, so don't sweat it. ;)

Thank you. I am just trying to learn about an engine I know little. I just figured a Hemi must be built looser to use that oil. I had never used it before. Thanks for the compliment on the car and you are right, Larry Shepard, enough said.
