Hello all hoping someone can give me a clue. My 70 Dodge R/T started up fine this year and I moved it around the driveway ok forwards and backwards then suddenly it wouldn't go into any forward gear but still goes into reverse no problem. Hasn't been driven much probably only 200 miles in the last 5 years. Never had any problems before and have owned it a good 12 years or so. It is the 440 4bbl and has super track pac. Where to begin linkage?

Will it go into first if you put it all the way into the '1' position?

No it's like there's a wall there any gear 1 thru 4

Shifter mechanism is jammed. Have to crawl under and move the rods. Take a bigger screwdriver under there to help jockey the rods around. I used to have that happen. Finally got a new hurst super comp shifter

Yes, move them all to the neutral position. (All three in the middle)
Just make sure your car is secured from rolling.
(E brake, chocked wheels, ext.)

Well you're right thanks! Being under there has led to some other concerns I hope you can help with. I will post pictures. In the 1st picture you'll see the housing where the shift linkage goes is pretty wet on the bottom. Right to the rear of this housing is a fitting as seen in the 2nd picture that appears to be leaking. It has a hose that I traced to the fire wall just drivers side of the steering column. I can't see where it goes once inside can you tell me where and what it's for? The housing from the 1st picture looks like it has a drain plug lower drivers side and a fill / level plug upper passenger side. I assume I should undo the fill plug and top up or should I drain completely and replace? And what's the best stuff to put in there? Any recommendations for how to stop that leak? Lastly in the 3rd picture there's a bell housing between the linkage and the oil pan that's missing 2 bolts. Is this just protective there isn't any fluid in there to leak is there? Sorry if I sound like a dope and thanks for any help!

2nd pic is your speedometer gear and cable. You can obtain new replacement 0-rings.

I can't quite make out what Im looking at in your last pic. Maybe someone else can help.

Wow thanks I would never have guessed speedo cable that's good to know. So there's fluid in there? Clutch fluid? That 3rd pic I think is a cover off the bottom for the clutch would be my guess. It's right in front of that linkage for the shifter.

Here's another pic that shows that cover better

The bolts are missing from the inspection cover/debris shield. Or are they broken off in the bellhousing? I recommend a new shifter assy. Or have yours rebuilt. It jammed once, it will again. Out on the road somewhere isn't ideal. I run synchroshift in mine. I think factory fill is gear oil. Anything is better than nothing. If you are not playing Ronnie Sox I would use gear oil

ok thanks and no nothing broke in the bellhousing they must have just worked out I'm certain they were there before

Also, don't know the circumstances but 200 miles in 5 years will be a death sentence for seals, fluids and other things too. These cars were meant to be driven. Hard. After 5 years mostly dormant, I would change all fluids. Then drive it daily if possible.

Yes I hear you and thanks, life's been getting in the way I'm aware I need to change my habits.
