Does anyone know if the newer hi torque starter motor will fit an early big block? Such as a 67 440 or a 1972 400? These look to be smaller, and lighter than the big bulky original ones that were standard in the early 70s. And would probably be easier to change with headers installed. What year and what size motor would you need to order for it to fit an early big block? All suggestions appreciated. Thanks

I used a mini-hi torque starter in my 70 RR, 383, as a temp while my original was sent out to be rebuilt. Fit right in, no problem. There's also a starter seal that you can get from this guy on ebay who has all mopar repair gadgets, that seals the opening in the bell housing when you put in the mini-starter.

I used the Dakota starter in my 72 big block. Can buy at any local parts store. Or 440 source has them too.

My 91 dodge w150 4x4 has a mini that works with the BB engines as well.Right around $45.00 new at your local parts store.

I was always under the impression that the old Chrysler gear reduction starter (in good shape at least) was a high torque unit to begin with. The main reason for the smaller one is to save weight and make good header clearance. That was the whole point of the gear reduction unit. To raise cranking torque.

Thanks Rusty, I guess my old reliable (and heavy) mopar starter is pretty high torque. It seems to spin this 13 to 1 motor over pretty easily. Lol. I guess what I'm really after is lighter weight and smaller size. That way, I may be able to remove it with out removing the headers. Looks like if I buy a starter for a 91 Dodge W 150 4X4 truck, that should be the right one. And not alot of bucks either.
