High Speed Low Frequency Vibration

These guys are firing on all cylinders. They've covered all the bases.
1. driveshaft out of balance (rust/dirt?)
2. transmission tail shaft bushing/seal worn
3. yoke too long and/or driveshaft too short so yoke is hanging out too far
4. u-joint getting worn
5. input bearing/seal on rear end
6. a tire that's still out of balance or the weight fell of 2 miles after it was put on

Have you found anything yet???

We have been having a major grassland fire here for the last week. Road closed, friends evacuated, etc. We are ok but it is starting to get under control. About 50,000 acres burned so far. It is been on the national news as the Sawmill Fire. My front porch the other night....

Things are starting to get back to normal. I will be looking at it this weekend.

My childhood friend is 6 miles from this fire. I'm saying prayers

In neutral reved up to equivalent RPM no vibration at all. The front of the drive shaft has a fair amount of up and down play in the tail shaft bushing.... Hard to change?

Not real hard but some work. I've seen a bushing puller that works without any disassembly (except output yoke removal) but i'm not sure how well it works on Mopars because at least the 727 bushing is pretty long. The one I've seen is Miller Tool 6957 if you can find it. Not sure if it fits A727s or not but they use them for Muncie and Turbo Hydromatics.

Otherwise the tail housing has to come off which means pulling the driveshaft, the transmission mount, support the transmission, open the access plate under the mount and remove the snap ring from the rear bearing retainer groove, remove the speedo cable and slide the housing off. Then you can drive the old bushing out and press a new one in. There will probably be a pretty good fluid spill in the process. But you will need to look at your yoke also as it could be scored up and worn down from the bushing slop and need replacing.

I forgot to add - a worn rear bushing or yoke that creates play can definitely cause driveline vibration. I've had that experience before.

Thanks, I have already blasted the shaft and replaced the u-joints during the restoration and I polished up the yoke. It was not galled or scored in anyway.

. Thoughts and prayers are with you, your neighbors, and friends!

To just buy the few individual parts you would need I would try TSR Racing or MAKCO Transmission - should be able to google both. I found I got parts really quickly from MAKCO but TSR was good also - just further away back East. I think all you need is the tailhousing gasket, bushing and rear seal. Maybe a new gasket for the little access plate that allows access to the snap ring for the rear bearing.

Well I did some other work on the car including setting the timing to what a '67 non emissions 318 would have (10 BTDC vs 2.5 ATDC) and a new fan clutch (not because it had bad bearings, it just was free wheeling too much). The vibration on the freeway is a _lot_ better.... I have the bushing and seals on order not sure if I will install them immediately. Maybe the clutch was chattering at high speed or something....
