Picking up a new coil for my 440.

Currently using the stock style mount on the intake. All the MSD Blaster 2 coils state to mount them upright. The High vibration one says mount it in any position.

I would have to buy the proper ballast as an add on or I could buy the bracket that AR engineering makes to put the coil upright in the same space.

Opinions?

The "high vibe" coils are epoxy potted,
where as standard coil are oil filled.
i used a MSD hi vibe coil (off roader) and it actually failed pretty quick, (possibly a faulty coil? Perhaps...) But I went back to a standard oil filled coil (MSD) and never had a problem.
in fact I've mounted MSD coils (oil filled) in the horizontal position without an issue.
Many years ago it was common for stock intake mounted coils to swell from heat and kill spark until they cooled back down again, (not just mopars either) but I haven't had/seen it happen recently that I can recall...
It was a common practice then to immediately pull the coil off the intake and mount it vertical on the fender, firewall etc. to prevent it from happening.

The HI vibe coil will fail Quick if it dosn't get air flow around it. The Oil filled last longer due to the fact that the oil in them also disapates the heat !
Always best to mount in rubber and Away from heat !

I tend to agree,
however my hi vibe coil was mounted on top of the inner fender, couldn't mount any further from heat,
unless I put it in the cab....
or on the hood lol.

Well I would say you had it in the rite spot for sure ! Just a faulty coil ? More than likly.

depends on how worried you are about factory looks.i mount all my coils on the pass fender right across from the alt.i can mount it upright, takes it out of eng vibration, and keeps it cooler.never had one fail mounted there.

Love my ARE coil bracket ;)

Yep, I love those guys at ARE pretty cool stuff comes out of there, I also use thier throttle bracket made for use with the eddy air gap performer RPM.

This is an older pic

I went with the AR bracket just like in BigJims post.

Works nice. Need to get a 90 deg coil wire so it looks a bit cleaner but all good otherwise.

Got a high vibration mounted just like goons. Rest of the motor not as pretty though. Been in there a long time, probably 20 thousand miles.
